10. Underwater Dunwich!
Diving in the lost city of
Dunwich using sonar
cameras. These can “see”
through the murk and find
the remains of the old
churches on the seabed.
20. It comes down to sense of place – and that’s
what Landscapes are all about…
Editor's Notes
Helping to celebrate and conserve the Heritage of the Suffolk coast and increase understanding of coastal change
So what do you think?
Different people (original residents, owners of the new homes, beach visitors, archaeologists) will all have a different viewpoint.
TtT aims to help people to have an understanding of this complexity.
“it’s not that simple” “be careful what you wish for”
Suffolk is a leader in UK for community led coastal planning. If you ask 6 impossible things before breakfast no-one will listen to you, if you know its complicated but have a point of view you really can influence outcome
Beyond that – “mood music” giving politicians “permission” to take hard choices
TtT brings together a wide range of partners and interest groups.
They don’t have to agree about everything – in fact they can have polar opposite views
The LPS is the safe place to work together on the things they DO agree about
PB has worked together really well – some v good individuals
Project selection really helped them gel as a group
LPS can help opposing interest groups to move from conflict to better understanding and dialogue to sustainable solutions
Extending people’s time frame – even 1953 floods have receded from memory, hence eg reaction to Dec Storm surge was much more about where agricultural land was flooded rather than the 300 people who didn’t die and the 3000 houses not flooded this time thanks to coast defences.
The coast is a point in time not a line on the map
Shingle St vs Orford Ness – it’s a dynamic coast, not an eroding one
Could have lots of lectures on cost benefit analysis and geomorphology but no-one would come
So instead… we can do fun things like…
Unpack the story;
5 schools, about 150 kids
~140 people at Open Day
6 pages EADT, TV, BBC website, BBC Radio (and more since)
Training for 30 odd-vols from ADLHS
Example of massive coastal change underwater
Big issue around lighthouse
600 people at Seafaring Day
All organised by locals
Writing comp in Suffolk magazine and on BBC radio
More to come
Successful in an atmosphere where the local politics are increasingly poisonous
Boat trips with kids
We can do this because of the flexibility of LPS – we were able to find a few £00 immediately and with no fuss
An example of where the quiet word of mouth acknowledgement is the right approach – we haven’t put this to the papers.
Creates an opening for individuals to challenge the anti NT narrative without having to overtly take sides
7000 odd people engaged with ftf
Go to where the people are – carnivals etc
Bring them to us – June 8th
Take advantage of large events organised by other eg AFD fringe
Rock!
FILM
10000 people directly engaged with – been on a workshop, attended one of our schools projects, etc
160 vols (over 2000 vol hours)
8 TV incl Countryfile
More than 15 radio
90+ articles in EADT and other papers
Key people – MPs, CE and key councillors from SCC and DCs
People from business esp in Tourism; the DMO
