2. Borderline Disorder Borderline disorder is a disorder in which the patient may experience symptoms which can be associated with borderline personality disorder. The patient may experience split personalities and become unable to control the actions which are completed when other “personalities” take over the mind and the body. There may be a loss of identity that occurs in the patient as the result of trauma or stress. The patient tries to bury these memories within the subconscious and at times a new personality may surface that can take over the identity and have a completely changed personality
5. Cont.. -Abandonment -Social isolation Difficulty with relationships Risky impulsive Self-harm - Binging -Excessive spending -Drugs -Alcohol -Engaging in risky sex - Reckless driving Difficulty with self identity
6. Causes of Borderline Personality Disorder The exact cause of BPD is unknown at this time, researchers believe that BPD arises as a result of genetic and environmental factors. Researchers also believe that there are strong indicators that several of the symptoms of BPD, such as impulsivity and aggression, similarly have their roots in genetics (Salters-Pedneault, 2008). Findings also indicate that environmental factors may also play a role in the development of BPD, such as childhood maltreatment, including being mistreated, neglected or abused.
7. Diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder BPD is diagnosed based on the presence of symptoms, followed by a psychological evaluation if BPD is indicated. Symptoms of BPD usually appear in early adulthood, peak in mid-adulthood, and, in some cases, disappear with age.
8. Symptoms In Order to be Diagnosed To be diagnosed with BPD, the patient must demonstrate at least five of the following symptoms. Intense fears of abandonment Pattern of unstable relationships Extreme and unstable self image Impulsive and self-destructive behaviors in at least two areas, such as spending, substance abuse, reckless driving, binge eating Suicidal behavior or self-injury threats or acts Wide mood swings caused by brief but intense episodes of depression, irritability or anxiety Chronic feelings of emptiness Inappropriate and intense anger Stress-related paranoia that passes fairly quickly and/or severe dissociative symptoms (“Borderline,” 2009, p. 2).
9. Treatment for BPD Successful treatment for borderline personality disorder involves psychotherapy and medication. Psychotherapy is recognized as the choice of treatments for BPD, and medications are used to treat the symptoms, as medications do not help the person with BPD learn the coping skills necessary for management of the disorder. One of the primary focuses of psychotherapy is suicide prevention (Grohol, 2009).
10. Cont.. Medication -Treats just the symptoms Psychotherapy -Dialectical behavior therapy - Transference-focused psychotherapy Psychotherapy is the number one treatment because both forms of psychotherapy help the person learn to deal with emotions and distress and improve relationships. Transference-focused psychotherapy concentrates on helping the person with BPD learn to manage his or her relationship with the therapist and then later learn to transfer the skills learned in that relationship to other relationships (“Borderline,” 2008).
11. Prognosis Borderline personality disorder is a very difficult disorder to live with because the depression and anxieties that are part of the disorder are also manifested as reactions to the distorted thinking patterns associated with BPD. By learning to recognize the onset of the symptoms, developing coping skills to ward to manage the symptoms, participating routinely in psychotherapy to address issues related to the disorder, and taking prescribed medication, as indicated, the person with BPD can lead a safe and healthy life.
