SCENE 1
FADE IN
JACK AND MA are in bed, a LAMP is placed on the bed side.
(MEDIUM SHOT)
JACOB:
Was I minus numbers?
MA:
Hmm?
JACK:
Up in heaven. Was I minus one,
minus two, minus three-?
MA:
Nah, the numbers didn't start till
you zoomed down.
JACK:
Through skylight. You were all sad
till I happened in your tummy.
MA:
You said it.
MA leans out of BED and switches the LAMP on. (CLOSE UP SHOT
ON MA's HAND)
JACK shuts his eyes as the light switches ON. He opens one,
then both. (EXTREME CLOSE UP ON JACOB's EYES)
MA:
I cried till I didn't have any
tears left. I just lay there
counting the seconds.
JACK:
How many seconds?
MA:
Millions and millions of them.
JACK:
No, but how many exactly?
MA:
I lost count
JACK:
Then you wished and wished on your
(MORE)

egg till you got fat.
JACK: (CONT'D)
MA smiles as she faces JACK. (CLOSE UP SHOT)
MA:
I could feel you kicking.
JACK:
What was I kicking?
MA:
Me, of course.
JACK giggles lightly. (MEDIUM SHOT)
JACOB:
From the inside, boom boom.
MA lifts her shirt, making her stomach jump. (POV SHOT)
MA:
I thought JACK's on his way. First
thing in the morning, you slid out
onto the rug with your eyes wide
open.
Camera pans to show the STAIN on the RUG from when JACK was
born.(MEDIUM SHOT ON RUG)
JACK:
You cutted the cord and I was
free.Then I turned into a boy.
MA:
Actually, you were a boy already.
MA gets out of bed, walking to the THERMOSTAT and turns the
temperature for heat. (LONG SHOT showing the room, CLOSE UP
shot on THERMOSTAT)
MA:
Tell me MR.FIVE, would you like
your present now or after
breakfast?
JACK:
What is it? What is it?
MA:
I know you're excited, but remember
not to nibble your finger, germs
could sneak in the hole.

JACK:
To sick me like when I was three
with throw-up and diarrhea?
MA:
Even worse than that, germs could
make you die.
JACK:
And go back to heaven early?
MA:
You're still biting it
MA walks over to JACK, she pushes his hand away lightly.
(MEDIUM SHOT)
JACK:
Sorry. Call me MR.FIVE again.
MA:
So, MR.FIVE, now or later?
JACK:
When are presents meant to be
opened?
MA:
Either way will be fun. Will I
choose for you?
JACK puts the finger he was nibbling on in his mouth, then
quickly in his armpit and clenches to "lock" it.
JACK:
I choose now.
MA pulls out RULED PAPER that is tied with a PURPLE RIBBON
in a KNOT. (CLOSE UP ON PRESENT)
MA:
Open it up, gently.
JACK unties the knot, flattening the paper out. A PENCIL
DRAWING of a boy sleeping. (CLOSE UP ON DRAWING. PANNING)
JACK:
Me! Why are the eyes of the me
shut?

MA:
You were asleep.
JACK:
How you did a picture asleep?
MA walks towards the bed and sits down next to JACOB.
(ESTABLISHING SHOT. MEDIUM SHOT AS MA SITS DOWN)
MA:
No, I Was awake. Yesterday morning
and the day before and the day
before that, I put the lamp on and
drew you.
MA looks at JACK and notices his expression. (CLOSE UP ON
JACK and MA looking at him)
MA:
What's up JACK? You don't like it?
JACK:
Not - when you're on at the same
time I'm off.
MA:
Well, I couldn't draw you while you
were awake, or it wouldn't be a
surprise, would it?
SILENCE between MA and JACK.
MA:
I thought you'd like a surprise.
JACK:
I prefer a surprise and me knowing.
END OF SCENE.
FADE OUT.
