Cardinal Spellman
boys take control
early in league win
By John Botelho
ENTERPRISE CORRESPONDENT
BROCKTON – The Cardinal
Spellman High boys basketball
team stuck to its recipe for success
– a staunch defensive showing cou-
pled with a balanced offensive at-
tack – to cruise past St. Mary’s of
Lynn at home on Tuesday night.
The Cardinals (11-3, 7-0 CCL)
held the Spartans (9-6, 5-3 CCL) to
18 points
in the first
half, in-
cluding just five points and one
field goal in the second quarter, as
they went on a 27-5 run to pull
away in a 77-53 Catholic Central
Large rout.
“Our defense usually gets us
going,” said Cardinal Spellman
boys basketball coach Mike Perry.
“Those guys were forcing
turnovers, diving around out there
and tipping balls to each other all
over the place. As a coach, you love
to see stuff like that.”
Cardinal Spellman point guard
Ryan Roche keyed much of the de-
fensive effort, coming away with
six of the Cardinals’ 16 steals.
Teammate and center Rory
Donovan had three of his four
steals in the first quarter.
As good as both players were
on defense, they might have been
even better on the offensive end.
Donovan netted nine of his
game-high 20 points in the first
quarter. He also collected 14 re-
bounds and a pair of blocked
shots.
Donovan had to work for his
points as he quickly became the fo-
cus of St. Mary’s double-teaming
defense in an effort to slow him
down. The end result was Spell-
man causing St. Mary’s into nu-
merous fouls, with Donovan draw-
ing eight fouls alone as his athleti-
cism kept St. Mary’s on its heels
the entire night.
“Rory has amazing jumping
ability,” said Perry. “He can really
get off the floor. He also runs the
floor well. There’s not many 6-5
guys who can get up and down the
court like him. He draws a lot of at-
tention.”

ROCK STEADYRockland boys avoid
upset by Abington to set
up Cohasset showdown

ENTERPRISE CORRESPONDENT
ABINGTON – Rockland High’s boys
basketball match-up at Abington High on
Tuesday night had all
the trappings of a trap
game.
With the Bulldogs staring at a Friday
night match-up against Cohasset High, the
team right behind them atop the South
Shore League standings, Rockland first
had to focus on the Green Wave.
Behind 23 points and 25 rebounds
from UMass-Lowell-bound Tyler Gibson,
Rockland was able to overcome some
poor free throw shooting and a triple-dou-
ble from Green Wave senior Matt Diver
(12 points, 18 rebounds, 12 blocks) for a
67-53 win.
Rockland improved to 13-1 (10-1
SSL) while Abington dropped to 8-7 (6-6
SSL).
“We just take it one game at a time and
just focus on each game,” said Gibson,
who added five blocks. “Every game is a
big game for us.”
Although Rockland led throughout,
the game tightened in the fourth quarter as
what had been an 18-point Bulldogs’ lead
heading into the final eight minutes was
cut to eight points with just under four
minutes remaining.
Abington used a couple of four-point
plays to spearhead a 15-5 run.
First, Ryan Mariano (13 points) con-
nected on a 3-pointer while Alex Nagle
was fouled battling for position. Nagle
knocked down one of two free throws. A
few minutes later, Joe Buckley (12 points)
banked home a trey while being hit on the
wrist and converted his free throw for an-

Looking to stay on
ball without Rondo
Celtics will share
load without true
point guard
By Jim Fenton
ENTERPRISE STAFF WRITER
WALTHAM – They have
been forced to change on the
fly just over the midway point
of the 2012-13 season.
No longer will the Celtics
be a team that has a true point
guard in control of the basket-
ball after All-Star Rajon Ron-
do suffered a season-ending
knee injury last Friday night.
Instead, they will be using
a different approach at the of-
fensive end, relying on more
ball movement and hoping
the lack of a true point guard
won’t be a major problem
against pressure defenses.
That is the situation the
Celtics are in after Rondo tore
the anterior cruciate ligament
in his right knee, leaving
Coach Doc Rivers with a

New Jersey in shootout

OSTON – Right from that early-morning
moment on Jan. 6, when bleary-eyed league
and union executives announced the NHL
lockout was over, the term “shortened season” has
been used practically non-stop.
The Bruins seem determined to either make
sure every second of the
shortened season counts, or
to stretch the season out.
They’ve made it hard to
argue with them.
The B’s recorded a 2-1
shootout victory over the
New Jersey Devils on Tues-
day night at TD Garden in
what has become typical
fashion:
They went to overtime.
They assured themselves of at least one point
with a third-period rally.
They ended up with two points for the fifth
time in six games (5-0-1).
“We’ve played some pretty good hockey so
far,” Coach Claude Julien said after the Bruins’
second white-knuckler in as many nights, follow-
ing Monday’s 5-3 win at Carolina. “And the
games (where we) weren’t quite as good as we
should have been, we found a way to win.
