Product Design Trends in 2024 | Teenage EngineeringsPixeldarts
The realm of product design is a constantly changing environment where technology and style intersect. Every year introduces fresh challenges and exciting trends that mold the future of this captivating art form. In this piece, we delve into the significant trends set to influence the look and functionality of product design in the year 2024.
How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

Abbigliamento infor-
male, occhialino con montatura
dorata, capello cortissimo ma il ta-
glio sembra voler mimetizzare
una calvizie in arrivo più che se-
guire una moda.
Di passaggio a Milano dal Kaza-
kistan, è in procinto di partire per
Londra dove ha una società «dor-
miente», la Zucca Icss Engineering
Limited U.K., costituita in attesa
che diventi operativa col suo pro-
getto onirico: «Un business che
porterà benessere alla Sardegna e
ai sardi per molti anni». Il piano è
creare nell’Isola una oil&gas. L’oc-
casione è il percorso del gasdotto
dall’Algeria all’Europa. «I sardi
dovrebbero prendere in mano il
segmento che riguarda l’Isola, at-
traversata da sud a nord dal con-
dotto, e occuparsene direttamen-
te». In attesa di sviluppi, Zucca
campa della sua libera professio-
ne. Attualmente è consulente del-
la Agipkco, nel team Central engi-
neering, che gestisce i contrattisti
ingegneri. Sempre a Londra è so-
cio in un’attività di
intermediazione tu-
ristica tra la capita-
le inglese e l’Euro-
pa. Una company
nata allo scopo di
canalizzare il traffi-
co turistico dalla
Sardegna verso il
Regno Unito. «Stia-
mo creando una re-
te - con referenti
anche in Belgio e
Norvegia - per aiu-
tare gli italiani che
viaggiano per va-
canza o per affari
nella ricerca di al-
berghi, percorsi tu-
ristici e gastronomi-
ci nella vecchia In-
ghilterra, e anche
per coloro che dal-
l’Europa si muovo-
no verso la Sarde-
gna».
* * *
Un oristanese
cosmopolita,
«precisamente di
Curcuris». Parla correntemente
molte lingue anche grazie alla
professione che l’ha portato per
anni in ogni parte del mondo. Per
chi avesse poca dimestichezza con
la geografia, spiega che Curcuris
era un antico villaggio nel distretto
di Ales, ora Comune a sé. Un paese
che «ho nel cuore, certo», ma che
non esita a definire «vuoto, con
più case che persone». Ha vissuto
lì da ragazzo: i suoi genitori
insegnanti ci erano finiti per
lavoro e lì sono rimasti. «A me non
è mai piaciuto più di tanto, infatti
me ne sono andato». Primo di
quattro figli, dopo la maturità
all’Istituto tecnico industriale ha
seguito dei corsi specialistici nel
settore petrolchimico. Dopo un
breve periodo lavorativo in
Sardegna, nel 1985 si è trasferito
a Milano e il salto verso le
multinazionali è stato breve: dalla
Eni alla Shell, alla Exxson mobile,
alla British Gas. Ha accumulato
una buona esperienza e ora si
sente pronto per il grande
progetto: «Voglio creare una
oil&gas anche in Sardegna».
Spiega il piano e illustra, su una
carta geografica casualmente
appesa alla parete della redazione
del nostro giornale, i punti del
globo interessati dall’erogazione
di gas dall’Algeria verso l’Europa.
«Voglio costituire una
multinazionale che sia operativa
in Sardegna quando verrà
attraversata dal gasdotto. Sarebbe
assurdo non coinvolgere i sardi in
qualcosa che li riguarda da
vicino». Dice di conoscere nei
dettagli questa operazione, «e noi
saremmo proprio dei cretini a non
approfittarne». Ma qualcosa
sembra frenare l’entusiasmo e
soprattutto il suo business.
* * *
Qual è il problema?
«Che noi sardi siamo pocos, lo-
cos y male unidos».
L’affermazione non è proprio
inedita, come la spiega?
«La mia idea prevede la com-
partecipazione di più imprese sia
locali che nazionali ed internazio-
nali. Ho già preso contatti con
aziende e professionalità nei di-
versi settori ma, mentre ho trova-
to grande disponibilità a Londra e
in altri Paesi esteri, non ho trova-
to alcun interesse in Sardegna».
gione».
Le risposte?
«Vaghe. Non hanno capito che il
progetto darebbe lavoro a miglia-
ia di persone».
Se è una soluzione al proble-
ma dell’occupazione, perché non
dovrebbero essere interessati?
«Occorrono molti soldi e nessu-
no è disposto a sborsarne. E poi
aspettano sempre che sia qualcun
altro a fare il grande passo, salvo
poi crepare di invidia o mettersi a
copiare».
In cosa consiste la multinazio-
nale che intende creare?
«In un gruppo di imprese con
più di una specificità: un pool di
ingegneri per la progettazione del
condotto per il gas, uno di impre-
se per gli scavi, uno specializzato
nella realizzazione di tubi e acces-
sori, un altro di esperti di cantie-
re per seguire le fasi di lavorazio-
ne».
Galsi. Avremmo anche uno staff di
esperti legali per l’assistenza - sia
ai privati che ai Comuni - negli
espropri dei terreni coinvolti dal
passaggio del gasdotto».
Sembra così semplice, chi la fa
tanto difficile?
«Non è semplice per nulla e allo
stesso tempo lo è. È un progetto
complesso, ma il ritorno economi-
co sarebbe enorme. La fa difficile
chi non ha lungimiranza, chi non
vuole rischiare, chi non vuole
complicarsi la vita».
Un ente pubblico come la Re-
gione ha il dovere di interessar-
si a progetti occupazionali, ma
se risponde picche, un motivo ci
sarà.
«Certo che c’è: occorrono fondi
e non sono disposti ad investire».
Sarà che la convenienza del
progetto la vede solo lei oppure
non l’ha spiegata a dovere.
«No, bisogna essere ciechi per
non capire l’importanza strategica
di questa operazione a livello
mondiale, non solo sardo o euro-
peo».
* * *
Grandi numeri, massimi sistemi,
enormi prospettive proprio come
in un sogno che non conosce
limiti. La fattibilità gli sembra a
portata di mano ma sfugge per un
piccolo dettaglio: mancano gli
investitori e chi ci crede.
Davanti alla carta geografica che
rappresenta il globo terrestre,
traccia le linee di interesse di
questo grande cantiere che
vorrebbe far sorgere in Sardegna.
In fondo alla questione sembra
esserci l’obiettivo di tornare a
casa, magari «a capo di una
operazione mondiale: dobbiamo
uscire dal recinto della nostra
piccola nazione».
Ha mantenuto la residenza a
Capoterra, nella sua villetta in un
nuovo quartiere, e lì sogna, ancora
sogna, di andarci a vivere con la
sua Yulya, 29enne ex miss kazaka,
che presto gli darà un bambino.
Burocrazia permettendo la
porterà in Italia, «ma è tutto così
complicato che avrei voglia di
lasciar perdere».
mio. Ci amavamo tantissimo, ci
saremmo sposati. Le trattative per
il matrimonio sono però sfumate:
lei musulmana, io cattolico
praticante. Nonostante questo mi
sono convertito, è bastato andare
in una moschea e firmare un
impegno. Ma il bello è stato
quando la famiglia ha voluto
sapere cosa avrei dato in cambio:
una casa, un cammello, denaro...
Io ho offerto una vecchia
automobile che avevo in Italia.
Gliel’avrei intestata, giuro. Ma da
lì la cosa è scemata
e non ci siamo più
visti». Poi è arrivata
Yulya. «Stiamo
insieme da un anno
e mezzo, non so
ancora se ci
sposeremo a
Milano, a Cagliari o
ad Atyrau, il suo
paese».
* * *
Più facile fare af-
fari a Londra o in
Italia?
«A Londra si lavo-
ra benissimo. Basti
pensare che puoi
aprire una limited
company in un atti-
mo. Puoi anche te-
nerla ferma, vuota,
inoperativa, e nes-
suno ti chiede nien-
te. Paghi le tasse se
produci e in base al
fatturato. In Italia
ho dovuto chiudere
i battenti di una srl
che tra commercialisti, tasse e
adempimenti burocratici di ogni
tipo, mi stava riducendo in mise-
ria».
Allora perché vuole tornare in
Italia?
«Perché l’opportunità che ab-
biamo col progetto del gasdotto
non si può ignorare. Basterebbe
to?
«Certo, è del settore e avrebbe
tutte le competenze per curarne
una buona parte».
L’ha proposto?
«Sì. Ma anche da loro aspetto ri-
sposte concrete».
