Riverwood will celebrate the success of the Housing First program, which has housed 190 formerly homeless individuals and families and saved taxpayers $1.4 million, at an event on October 27 from 5:30 to 8 pm at the Waterman Grille in Providence. The event will honor those who made the program possible, including Senator Pavia-Weed, Representative Martin, and United Way of Rhode Island. The program targeted the chronically homeless and has proven stable, with 80% of placements still housed after 12 months.

1) By the end of 2011, Housing First Rhode Island will be housing 190 persons and
families who were formerly homeless and saving taxpayers over $1.4 million each
year.
2) The “Keys for the Homeless” event will celebrate and honor those who have
made the Housing First program possible including Senator Teresa Pavia-Weed,
Representative Peter Martin, United Way of Rhode Island and local landlords.
3) The program reached the target population, the chronically homeless. Participants
were homeless an average of 335 days the year prior to entering the program and
were off and on homeless for an average of 7.6 years. Housing proved to be stable,
with 80% of the placements still housed after 12 months.
