  1. {"18":"[16a]What do I mean by a “wine culture?” In short, it is a culture in which the domesticated grapevine and wine have become so important that it dominates all the major events of life—from birth to death—as well as everyday social interactions at meals and gatherings, the economy, religion, and so forth. \nIf I had any doubts about the hold that a “wine culture” could have over a people, my trip to the Caucasus in 1998 totally convinced me. Life is still very much like you see here in a primitivist painting by Pirosmani, a Georgian artist of the 19th-early 20th c. Wine is still made in large jars (kwevri) underground, and on the lees. Dinners are presided over by a toastmaster [or tamada], who offers up the many toasts throughout the meal to the motherland, family, and life itself–impossible to imagine apart from wine. \nThe “wine culture” in the Caucasus goes back to the Neolithic period, reaching a high-point in the Bronze Age when exquisite drinking goblets in gold and silver were produced–like this one from Armenia [from Karashamb] on the left, showing typical hunting and war scenes. The climax is a festive banque in which the ruler sits on a throne with cup in hand [attended by a cupbearer]. This motif was to become the standard symbol of Near Eastern and Egyptian civilization, dominated by wine, in which the king by raising his wine cup assured the fertility of the land and the prosperity of his people.\n"}
