The document discusses upcoming changes to rail safety regulations and legislation in Australia. Most Australian jurisdictions will pass new rail safety bills by December 2012. When the laws are adopted, safety supervision will not decrease but processes will change. The document also provides tips for rail safety including that trains cannot swerve or stop quickly, and warns about optical illusions that can misjudge a train's speed and distance. Rail safety training is highlighted as important for safely working near rail corridors.
New rail safety regulations are being considered in South Australia and other Australian jurisdictions, with legislation likely to pass and take effect in December 2012. When states adopt these laws, safety supervision will not decrease but processes will change. Rail safety training provides instruction on safely accessing rail corridors and what to do in emergencies, teaching keys skills to work safely near trains. It covers required knowledge of Queensland Acts and national compliance standards. Practical observation and simulated scenarios are used to demonstrate safe procedures.

WORKSHOP – Learning from Derailments
8.30 – 12.30pm
Most derailments are minor, however all of them result in temporary
disruption of the railway system, and they can be dangerous to human health
and safety.
Background
The conference kicks off with a workshop and this year it will be focussed on
derailments and what we can learn from previous incidents.
We will focus on one specific incident that has recently occurred and review
this, determining the causes and providing a full summary of the incident.
Purpose
What we hope will prove valuable for delegates are the lessons we can learn
and put into practice for the future. We hope the forum will bring together
like minded individuals and will be used as a platform to share ideas and
knowledge.

12.00 GUEST SPEAKER: Paul De Gelder
Improvise. Adapt. Overcome. These three words – the mantra of the
Australian Army – resonated with Paul de Gelder the first time he heard
them. Paul chased adventure wherever he could find it, from his wild
ride as a hoodlum teen and his drug-and-alcohol fuelled stint working
in a strip club to hauling his way up to the elite echelons of the defence
forces.
But trouble hunted him down in the form of a brutal shark in February
2009. Paul lost two limbs, and his career as a daredevil navy clearance
diver was flung into jeopardy. Drawing on everything his eventful life
had taught him, Paul left nothing to chance in his recovery. He fought
through excruciating pain, smashing challenge after challenge, and
amazing the medical staff with his will to succeed. His inspiring story
takes ‘never say die’ to a whole new level.
