Name: Ronnie Riddell
Project Title: Mastering Essential Standards through Technology
Project Subject: Sixth grade tutorial language arts class
Grade Level(s): middle school-sixth

Essential Question: How do we get sixth grade tutorial students to master essential standards
                        using technology?
Assignment Having narrowed down the two essential standards that my students need to
Summary: master before year end, I am using technology to help students practice the
standards they need to master. I am using Level Up Tutorials through our
                        Holt adoption,
Quizlet, and Goanimate for a final project. I will do this with 2 groups of
students for 2 four week blocks. I will also pre and post test to assess
                        progress.
Approximate Length of Unit (days, weeks)
Two groups of four weeks
Goals: That the students master the essential standards and demonstrate mastery using
technology.

Objectives: To know and apply the essential standards 6 WC 1.2

Lesson Plan Sequence of Events – give day-to-day details:
Day one: Direct teaching of perfect tenses of verbs using a power point created by the publishers of
our Holt curriculum followed by student groups.
Students break into 2 groups: one goes to the computers to complete the level-up tutorial on tenses of
verbs from Holt, and fill in corresponding Cornell notes. The other group works with me on packets
which further teach the use of the perfect tenses. At this time I check for understanding and monitor
the quality of student work.

Day two: Review perfect tenses, and show students how to get to Quizlet and how to use it to practice
with recognizing tenses of verbs. Have small groups complete practice at the computer while the other
half of the class work with me in a small group on the same concept.

Day three and four: Rotate groups through the computers until everyone has finished the two tasks at
the computer, and their packet work with me.

Day five: Take the students to the library and show them how to open an account on Goanimate. Show
my prototype of a cartoon in which the character is involved in at least 6 scenes demonstrated the
three simple tenses and the three perfect tenses.

Day six and seven (if necessary): students write and animate their own cartoon using the different
tenses. Student rubric is handed out before starting the project and explained.

Day seven or eight: Students show their cartoon and receive their evaluation.

Key Websites Used: The key websites I will be using are Holt (Think Central), Quizlet, and
Goanimate.

Accommodations for Differentiated Instruction
Resource Student: Resource students often work best when allowed to process their thoughts
and work on the computer. I would place my resource students next to a
reliable student that he/she could rely upon for support if needed

Gifted Student: Gifted students can go beyond the scope of this assignment to work at home
and include some advanced technology on Goanimate.

Content Standards: The standards I am covering are specific to language conventions. This is
English Language because my sixth grade language arts colleagues and I are sharing students
Arts- 6th Grade in 4 week rotations. We have divided up the essential standards to be taught
to this core group of tutorial students. These students are in these classes
because they did not reach a score of 350 or proficient on the CST last year.
At this time in the year (third trimester) we have determined the standards
that they still are struggling to master. I have taken the written and oral
English Language conventions standard 1.2- Identify and properly use
indefinite pronouns and present perfect, past perfect, and future perfect verb
tenses; ensure that verbs agree with compound subjects and created my tech
unit around the latter: perfect verb tenses.

Listening and Speaking standard 1.6 : Support opinions with detailed
evidence and with visual or media displays that use appropriate technology.

I am also covering this standard through my use of the interactive websites
that my students will be using to master those standards.
ISTE Standards
The following ISTE standards are also met through this unit.
