The Republican Governors Association achieved its goal of winning at least one gubernatorial race in 2009 by winning both New Jersey and Virginia. Chairman Haley Barbour credits disciplined budgeting and strategic targeting that allowed the RGA to invest $13 million in each race. Republican candidates Chris Christie and Bob McDonnell focused on pocketbook issues like taxes and jobs to win in states that voted heavily Democratic in 2008. These victories provide momentum for more Republican gains in 2010.
