The children that I work with range in disabilities, some of these include autism, cerebral palsy, emotional/behavioral impairments, cognitive impairments, blindness, deafness, and physical disabilities.
Educational Field Worker: Discovery Elementary School (517) 655-2855 September 2010- Present
I aid in a kindergarten class two days a week as a part of my curriculum in MSU’s College of Education. I have created and taught two full lessons in science and social studies to the class. These lessons incorporated activities, class discussion, and assessments. I also aid with daily activities such as the morning routine, giving assessments, reading workshops, and classroom management.
Educational Field Worker: Marble Elementary School 1-517-333-7860 February 2010- May 2010
I spent a semester working with an elementary classroom in East Lansing for students with emotional impairments. I worked with students whose behavior inhibits their participation in general education classes. I assisted children in assembling basic curricular needs and support the school’s staff with disciplinary actions to generate an environment that is both safe and educational. Additionally, I have had the privilege of designing two lesson plans and corresponding assessments for two of the children with especially high need.
Special Needs Caregiver: Katherine Hansen 1-517-333-1540 May 2009-Present
I take care of a 21 year old young woman with developmental delay, hypotonia, and Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome. These conditions cause extremely low muscle tone, cognitive impairments and frequent seizures. The young woman is currently unable to speak or stand on her own thus requiring assistance with daily activities. I am responsible for taking care of her basic needs including feeding, daily medications, toileting, handling seizures, keeping her entertained and anything else that presents itself while she is in my care.
Educational Field Worker: Holt Elementary School 1-517-694-0401 Sept. 2009-Present
I aided in a first grade classroom in Holt for 3 hours a week. I worked with one student in particular, focusing on improving reading and writing skills, as part of my Michigan teacher certification training. I spent my time observing behaviors, specific learning styles, and teaching methods as well as aiding the teacher in teaching lessons to help educate her students.
RDC Tutor (Refugee Development Center) 1-517-482-2252 Sept. 2007-Dec.2007
At the refugee development center I tutored refugees, with ages ranging from 7-40, in a variety of subjects; the English language, writing, math, and social skills.
Eastern High School Tutor 1-517-755-1050 Jan. 2009- present.
I tutored a senior in English once a week, and focused on writing and grammar. I also tutored in a Special education American literature class, at times working one-on-one with students in subjects such as biology, math, and English. At other times I worked with the whole class in American literature, at times running the entire lesson.
Lifeguard/resident Counselor: Camp Copneconic 1-810-629-9622 June 9, 2008-Aug. 27, 2008
As a resident camp counselor I worked with a group of about 10 girls each week. I lived in a cabin with children aged 6-17, spending the days helping them with different activities as well as the different emotions that come with spending time away from home. I worked with children from different cultures, socioeconomic statuses, and areas. Some of the children had various special needs, such as diabetes, kidney disease, and learning disabilities.
Developmental Experience
Multi-Racial Unity Living Experience (MRULE)
While at MRULE I participated in activities ranging from volunteer work with low income communities to mentoring with children from those very same areas. Communities I have participated in range from Chicago to Lansing in various neighborhoods. Additionally, I was a pen-pal to a 14 year old orphan in South Africa whose correspondence through MRULE I enjoyed greatly.
Exchange Student Experience
During my junior year of high school I participated in an exchange student program that took me from the Southern towns of England to the Northern reaches of France. I studied and experienced life with the families around me and focused on the diversity that comes through language.
Volunteer Work
Volunteering in St. Louis
I went to St. Louis, Missouri for a week to work with “at-risk” children. I spent most of the time in a day care, but occasionally trips were planned to various places including museums and pools that allowed me to interact with the children in a fun, and sometimes educational, environment.
Vacation Bible School
I worked with elementary aged students in arts and crafts. We also put on a play and interacted during and recreation time. The program was a week long and was intended to help the children learn about religious themes.
References
Katherine Hanson
Care Employer and Parent of Special Needs Child
1-517-333-1540
Shera Emmons
Elementary School Teacher
517-749-6251
