Editor's Notes

  1. 9:00 – 9:10Introductions.Explain who BITC are.PREP: Flip charts, pens, post it notes, PPT, Handouts, Name Cards
  2. 9:30 – 9.35
  3. Introduction to EngagementGlobal finding and trends are interesting – recession hasn’t really had an impact – but it is the daily dynamics in your team and organisation that really matterEngagement starts with leaders – that is you?Successful organisations have superior levels of employee engagement and above average leadership – study done by Blessing and White 2011
  4. 9.45 -10.00 Discussion 10.00– 10.10 FeedbackIn threes, feedback one answer to eachThink back to when you were last engagedFeedbackMeans involved, contributingFeels positive, happy ,secure, alertShows productive, safe, healthy, good customer serviceAim to get them thinking and affirming why they’re here.
  5. 10.10 – 10.20 for next 3 slidesOffer them a definition at the start of the day , try and get everyone singing from the same hymn sheet. Link to Responsible Business – engaging employees (creating opportunities to connect) is responsible business practice and a great way to engage employees is through responsible business practice that connects to the wider community and world (More from Gary later)Organisations need people who can cope with increasingly uncertain environments. Employees will need to let go of old ways of doing things that no longer work and develop new skills and capabilities, to stay connected with the world around them. .
  6. 9:45Tried to keep a really simple flow to the course – avoid confusion, simpler the betterMotivate:Who do you need to motivate and how do you motivate them?Mobilise:How can you get them doing itMeasure: how can you find out what you need to so and demonstrate success. E.g. to scale a pilot to a full programme
  7. 10.30 – 10.40 Play video as we go into Discussion10.45 – 11.00 break for tea and coffee.
  8. 10:30 – 10:45
  9. 11:00 – 11:15 Presentation11:15 – 11:30 QuestionsSo we’ve looked at motivation.I think now is a good time to hear from a business about why they think Employee Engagement is so important and also how they’ve gone about engaging their employees through their responsible business practices. This will help us move onto the next M – and how we mobilise employees.
  10. 11:30 – 11.35Thanks Kevin Rhonefrom Seddon. Here you can see some great ways in which this business has used responsible business to engage their employees. You can clearly see how they have motivated and mobilised their employees. So now I want to move on to thinking about mobilising employees – how do we move from passive recipient to active participant? In particular how do we use responsible business to mobilise people?
  11. 11.35 –11.50 discussion11.50– 12.00 feedbackNow we would like you to share examples from your own businesses - where you have problems with engagement and also where you have good examples of engagement.Where are you now? Challenge them to think a bit more broadlyThink of infrastructure, governance, emotional and cultural as well as the usual programmes. What levels of engagement do they have now?, Heads and hearts, policy and practice, your understanding? Strategy?Where would you like to be.Eg level of penetration of the market, level of retention, Think in terms of engagement, at all levels within the business.Obstacles: senior management not committed, think just of fundraising, green wash, top down and not bottom up, command and controlEnablers: champions, clear policy, effective communication, range options, participative style of management, inclusive culture, recognises diversityThey should pick up ideas for enablers through the day
  12. 12:00– 12:10So we’re on the home straight! The final step is Measure. Why do we need to measure Employee Engagement? – any ideas? Measurement is important so you know where you stand and what might be going wrong or if you have a problem or not. If you do measure make sure you follow up and employees see visible action – otherwise it can be counterproductive. Particularly for smaller businesses this is a challenge. -e.g. all employees through survey monkey and individual through individual conversations So We’ve been through the whole process. Time to reflect
  13. 12:10– Review and final discussionsHow are you going to take this back to your organisation in these three levels– who can you influence? What do you need to do personally, at a team level and at an organisational level?Who do you need to influence to achieve this? What are the obstaclesHow will you measure success.Remember to think about Motivate, Mobilise, Measure and think about how you communicate and the culture of your organisation. This has been a brief introduction. There are a huge number of case studies which will help you further. As well as toolkits on line. We will follow up today’s session with an email including a whole range of links, as well as this presentation. There are also 5 more sessions in the Responsible Business programme which will look at some of the issues we’ve touched on today in further detail.
