Thermoelectric energy conversion using nanophononic metamaterials is explored by an undergraduate researcher and their graduate mentor and faculty advisor in Aerospace Engineering Sciences. A membrane mode nanophononic metamaterial design is proposed to improve the thermoelectric figure of merit ZT, which is a measure of the efficiency of thermoelectric materials and depends on the electrical conductivity σ, Seebeck coefficient S, temperature T, and thermal conductivity k.
