This document provides details on the film and slideshow elements to accompany a site-specific theatre production at the de la Warr Pavilion in Bexhill. It outlines several film and slideshow segments of different lengths (2-5 minutes) that will be projected onto a large screen behind the performers. The segments will depict topics related to the Victorian era characters and stories featured in the script, including Annie Brassey's life, Kate Marsden's journey to Siberia, old Bexhill, and World War I. All film and slides are meant to complement and enhance the words and scenes in the play.

All slides or film will be back projected onto the large screen at the de la Warr Pavilion on
the stage. The screen will be positioned behind the performers space.
Opening of the play
o Still slide of the Museum interior or exterior, or more abstract interpretation – used
as backdrop for all the museum scenes.
*Annie Brassey film*
o Sea based film or slide of photos of Brassey’s life to accompany a song which Annie
Brassey will sing
o Approx. 3 mins in length
o Not too heavy
o Annie Brassey rich Victorian lady who sailed around the world in her large steam
assisted yacht in the 1880s, with her husband and children and 18 servants, collected
geological and arty objects from around the world which she later donated to the
Bexhill Museum – SEE SCRIPT
Kate​​Marsden map
o Old map of Siberia which Marsden will be refereeing too whilst performing –
SEE PAGE 14 OF THE SCRIPT
o The map could be static slide or it could have a line/dots/sled etc showing
Marsden’s route.
Kate Marsden’s life in Siberia
o Film or slide show of Siberia – simple in style - ie. heat, cold, snow,
mosquitoes, travelling by horse etc - could be literal or more abstract. Not
modern as her journey was in the 1880s
o Approx 5 minutes in length.
o Running from page 15 top: Marsden “June in Yakutsk…” – until Carol on page
16 “the whole thing was a waste of time” – towards bottom of 16 – this is a
very descriptive section of the play and the film should complement the
words.
o Kate Marsden was an extraordinary Victorian lady who did many
extraordinary things including travelling from Moscow to Siberia to find a herb
that supposedly could cure lepers – SEE SCRIPT

o A 2 minute film/slide show of old Bexhill - slides, photos, old film (ie. Sherlock
Holmes film) - finish with a picture of the 8​th ​
Earl de la Warr.
o Old Sargent will be miming that he is making a speech (no speaking), and the
cast/students will be watching and reacting, also without speaking.
o Music or soundscape playing during this slide show/film provided by dv8
Bexhill.

o Film or slide show during Young Sargent’s poem about conscientious objectors
– page 24 of script
o Images/film of the 1​st​
World War or all wars or more abstract leading into a
still or moving image of a forest, which becomes the backdrop for the next
scene.

End of play
o A 3 minute slide/film of Bexhill for the end of the play accompanied by dance,
music and curtain call from the performers
o Style – celebratory, can be modern, uplifting about Bexhill, could be literal or
more abstract.
