KULULA.COM - Case study Mini In-Class analysis - HAVING A BIT OF FUN WITH AN ...Amanda Brinkmann
We had the privilege of having the inimitable Prof Geoff Bick as our Marketing Lecturer during Module 3 of the EMBA. For many students, this intense, Honours level exposure to Marketing is a completely new experience.
With 25 years of Marketing, Business, Advertising, Communications et al experience under my belt, I must say that I have seldom enjoyed a lecture series as much as I did the two week intensive course with Geoff.
He is a seasoned marketer, a disruptive innovator, has a WICKED sense of humour and is a MASTER at his craft. As part of our ' action learning' process, there was a requirement for each modular group [ 6 members per group] to submit at least 4 of the assigned Case Studies.
This entailed studying a brief and answering or analysing questions specific to the brief. I was fortunate to draw the kulula.com story out of the hat - and decided to have some fun with the Presentation as well as Analysis document.
I kept my peers in class - my audience - in mind - a great many engineers, CA's, metalurgists, PhD's etc - who had not been exposed, in great detail to the principles of marketing.
SO - I had some fun and learned quite a bit about the ' birth' of kulula.com.
A light-hearted piece of work that provided me with some space for creativity and just playing with my studies.
Aimed at anyone who is interested in...well...an interesting story - see the brief as well as commentary within the document - as well as the basics of disruptive innovation and how to take a brand to market within financial as well as economic limitations.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Provincial Roundtable Report
A Report from Parliamentary Assistant Granville Anderson to the Minister of Children and Youth Services
SEPTEMBER 2015.
IMO it is a comprehensive and honest report that acknowledges the importance and need for more diagnostic facilities. This is in contrast to the recent Government of Canada, Nineteenth Report of the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights entitled Study of the Subject Matter of Bill C-583, An Act to amend the Criminal Code (fetal alcohol spectrum disorder), tabled in the House of Commons on May 8, 2015, which made no reference to the need for increased diagnostic facilities.

AVOIDING THE " TRAGEDY OF THE COMMONS" IN SA FISHING INDUSTRY - A SIMPLIFIED...Amanda Brinkmann
A Mini-modular EMBA 15 - UCTGSB - Modular Sub-Group Assignment. Based in Business Acumen and with a week to study and interrogate the intricacies of the SA & Global Fishing Industry, various theories/methodologies related to Business Acumen and Archetypes upon which to graft potential long-term solutions to the Wicked Problems of Over-fishing - which is leading us, globally, to the Tragedy of the Commons.
The document starts with the PowerPoint Presentation that we had 5 minutes to present - quite a task for such a large topic. The discussion document, though basic, does perhaps shed some light on the challenges that we are currently facing globally - related to all natural resources.
The requirement - writing only a 1000 word report - using the work and thought done within the Appendices, does not allow for great depth. But perhaps there is value to be found in the simplicity of the recommendations as well as within the simple, yet practical methodological approaches employed.

Dear sir/madam
Reference Ms Amanda Brinkman
It is my pleasure to write this letter of support for Ms Amanda Brinkman. I got to know her over
the past three years in her role as Special Adviser to: Minister of Health & Leader of Government
Business: Western Cape Government.
As a group we have had a number of interactions with her and all of us have been immeasurably
impressed by her attitude and enthusiasm for her role as ambassador for the Western Cape
government. In our interactions over the years, I have come to know Amanda as an extra-
ordinary woman who is professional, dedicated, passionate and extremely hard-working.
I first met Amanda early in 2010 when we approached the Western Cape Department of Health
with a proposal for the establishment of a PPI in the Eden district with respect to the treatment
of cancer patients. Since then through 2012, Amanda has been an instrumental party to the
success of establishing a pilot project in 2011 which was recently extended for another two-year
period.
As part of the process to move from a concept discussed in face-to-face meetings to a more
formal proposal to that could be considered by the WC Department of Health, it often was
necessary to bounce ideas off Amanda to get her point of view. She always found the time to
comment on draft documentation, replying to email requests and often made excellent
innovative suggestions to improve or augment our thinking.
Amanda is passionate about patient care in general and towards the well-being of the population
of the Western Cape in particular. This was evident in the energetic and positive way she
participated in a brainstorming discussion about reaching the cancer community in smaller
towns outside of Cape Town by offering chemotherapy services through a mobile clinic initiative.
I have experienced Amanda as great problem-solver and her ability to connect appropriate
parties to each other to allow a project to move forward is highly commendable.
Yours sincerely
