This document discusses the arguments for and against homework. While recent studies have found no conclusive evidence that homework improves achievement across the board, the document argues that homework provides necessary time for students to read books, write essays, and complete research projects outside of limited school hours. It notes that Asian-American students tend to benefit more from homework because they are more likely to complete assignments. The document concludes by stating the anti-homework movement could lead to a time when students do no reading, writing, or research beyond what can be done in a school day.
This document discusses research into why college students are silly. Through interviews with current and former students and teachers, the research found the main reasons for silliness in students are their friend circles, family status, and desire to show off to boyfriends/girlfriends. Silly students tend to become more well-rounded and experienced than "good" students, having knowledge of both positive and negative aspects of life. While silliness is okay in moderation, students should still show respect to families and authority figures. The research concludes silly students often develop into better people than those who are simply "good".
This document provides details of an information literacy lesson plan created by Laurie Roberts for a 1st grade reading/science class. The lesson involves students locating facts about different weather types from non-fiction books and online. Students are placed into groups and search the media center and internet for facts, then present their findings to the class. The document outlines learning objectives, materials, procedures, assessments and a reflection on collaborating with the classroom teacher to teach the lesson. It discusses challenges with collaboration and ways the lesson could be improved, such as shortening internet research time.
The essay argues that while the Internet can be beneficial if used properly, most Mendocinian EFL students use it in ways that are detrimental to their academic success. It provides examples of how students often waste time on social media or entertainment sites instead of doing schoolwork. It also notes that excessive Internet use can lead to procrastination, distraction, fatigue, and isolation. However, it acknowledges the Internet can be useful for research and communicating with teachers and classmates about coursework if used in moderation. Overall, the essay concludes that for most Mendoc

In Rebekah Nathan’s My Freshman Year (2005), as a professor, she involved in university community again as a freshman to know about how different between International and American students. She becomes a freshman to know the students better. She did everything as a “participant observer” and studied the college culture and students as a real student. It’s just like when you want to discover whether one food is delicious or not, you cannot get true feelings if you not try it yourself. She studied like a real freshman and lived in the dormitory.
I am an international student, when I first come to UCSC community. I always feel so different between my China high school and UCSC community. International students have different culture; they are have different life style and use different language to talk. When I came in Cowell College, have a lot of local American students talk to me, but we just have the exterior communication we cannot talk with each other deeply, because I do not talk to much with a new friend. During International orientation, I make a lot of Chinese friend. But they are would like talk to the friends before International orientation they meet. No matter about the person is a Chinese student or local American student. However this is because of different culture. Also I interview ten Chinese students in UCSC, have 8 people, they are in China did want talk with a Chinese new friend. If the friend talk too much and with deeply communicate to they, they will feel so strange. Only have two people feel that is well. As me, I feel with mostly people. But I saw a lot of local American student in dinning hall, they did not know another before but they are talk very much and with deeply. When I first day came to Cowell core class, I found out UCSC students showing different between Chinese students (in China) in classroom. UCSC students would like to talk with professor in class. But Chinese Rarely communicates with the professor. This document outlines two studies being conducted by Master's students at Ghent University on the literacy practices and needs of students at the University of Western Cape (UWC) and Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) in South Africa. At UWC, the study involves distributing a questionnaire to 112 students, conducting a focus group with 5 students, and having 8 students complete literacy diaries. Preliminary results from the focus group indicate that most students do not enjoy reading for leisure but see it as essential for their studies, and that they feel they write more academically now than previous generations. At CPUT, the parallel study aims to understand students' literacy needs, struggles, and any differences between disciplines through a questionnaire and focus group
The document provides details for an orientation session for peer mentors at Utah State University. It includes an agenda with topics such as the roles and responsibilities of peer mentors, effective listening skills, FERPA regulations, a peer mentor code of ethics, planning class sessions and office hours, and details about night activities for new students during orientation week. Peer mentors are also given instructions on tasks like handing out lanterns for the luminary event and building the large "A" formation on the quad. The document aims to prepare the peer mentors for their duties in assisting new students transition to USU.
The document discusses recommendations for teaching social studies during the COVID-19 pandemic. It recommends starting with social-emotional learning by understanding students' home environments. It also suggests finding ways to promote relevance and connection to students' lives. Maintaining connections with other teachers is also important for collaboration and support. Interactive games and allowing student expression can make the typically "boring" subject of history more engaging online. Familiar tasks and relating historical events to current issues can provide comfort and build skills during this time of change.

Rethinking Kållered │ From Big Box to a Reuse Hub: A Transformation Journey ...SirmaDuztepeliler
"Rethinking Kållered │ From Big Box to a Reuse Hub: A Transformation Journey Toward Sustainability"
The booklet of my master’s thesis at the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology. (Gothenburg, Sweden)
This thesis explores the transformation of the vacated (2023) IKEA store in Kållered, Sweden, into a "Reuse Hub" addressing various user types. The project aims to create a model for circular and sustainable economic practices that promote resource efficiency, waste reduction, and a shift in societal overconsumption patterns.
Reuse, though crucial in the circular economy, is one of the least studied areas. Most materials with reuse potential, especially in the construction sector, are recycled (downcycled), causing a greater loss of resources and energy. My project addresses barriers to reuse, such as difficult access to materials, storage, and logistics issues.
Aims:
• Enhancing Access to Reclaimed Materials: Creating a hub for reclaimed construction materials for both institutional and individual needs.
• Promoting Circular Economy: Showcasing the potential and variety of reusable materials and how they can drive a circular economy.
• Fostering Community Engagement: Developing spaces for social interaction around reuse-focused stores and workshops.
• Raising Awareness: Transforming a former consumerist symbol into a center for circular practices.
Highlights:
• The project emphasizes cross-sector collaboration with producers and wholesalers to repurpose surplus materials before they enter the recycling phase.
• This project can serve as a prototype for reusing many idle commercial buildings in different scales and sizes.
• The findings indicate that transforming large vacant properties can support sustainable practices and present an economically attractive business model with high social returns at the same time.
• It highlights the potential of how sustainable practices in the construction sector can drive societal change.

A Day in Jenny’s Life
Jenny is now interning at Central every Monday and Friday. So on
these two days, she has to get up at 7 a.m., then take a shuttle bus
at 8 to get to the MTR station so that she can make it to the office
before 9:30. When she finishes her work and heads back to the
University MTR station, it is usually 7 pm. Then she takes the
school shuttle bus and gets off at United College Stop, and has
her dinner at UC Canteen. She then goes back to her dorm for rest.
On a regular weekday, she spends her whole day at school taking
classes. As a year-4 student who will soon graduate, she checks
her email every day to see if there is any notice about
recruitment talks, career fairs or job hunting workshops. As
being too occupied with career and study stuff, she has to say
good-bye to the Karate Club activities that she used to actively
engage in.
At weekends, she hangs out with her friends, like taking local
cultural activities, going to movies, and visiting museums. She has
a concern over marginalized groups in society.

Meet Tony
Tony is a taught-program postgraduate student of CUHK.
A day in Tony’s life
Tony lives outside the campus. When he has classes, he goes to
school by MTR. Most of his classes begin at 6.30 p.m., so he
arrives at University MTR Station at 5.30 p.m. Since the classes
are held in classrooms of New Asia, which locate on top of the
hill, he has to take the shuttle bus and gets off at New Asia
Station. After getting off, he has his dinner at New Asia’s
Canteen, and then heads to the classrooms. When classes are
over, he sometimes goes to restaurants to have night snack with
his friends.
As a postgraduate student, Tony has a lot of discussions with his
classmates. He often books the group study rooms of CUHK
libraries on Internet, sometimes with smartphone and
sometimes with computer. After discussion, he has dinner with
his guys on campus. He likes trying different dishes in different
canteens, because there are said to be more than 20 canteens in
CUHK.

When he studies by himself, the first thing he is used to do is
opening his mailbox to check whether there is new E-mail sent by
the school or professors. He links CUHK web mail with his
private mailbox, so sometimes he also checks the web mail inbox.
And then, he opens his Sina Weibo to read news. If he discovers
some interesting events to be held in CUHK, he sometimes register
for them. After checking E-mail and Weibo, he opens several
major job recruitment websites, as he is about to graduate and
he is trying to find a job.
At weekends, he likes going to gym with his friends. Sometimes
they also have some running in CUHK stadium.
Tony’s goals
- Graduating in summer
- Finding a satisfying job
Tony’s motivations
“I like to be highly efficient and plan everything ahead of time. I
don’t like wasting too much time in unreasonable waiting, such as
the library booking system’s slow loading.”
“I like wholesome life style. Balanced diet and regular indoor
and outdoor exercises is a must to me.”

Tony’s pain points
“I don’t know what dishes each canteen offers everyday. So
deciding in which canteen to have meal is like a gamble. I don’t
what I will get from it.”
“Undergraduate students often have PE courses or other
activities in stadium. Sometimes I go to the stadium but it’s
closed, without any public notification.”
“I don’t know when the shuttle buses departure. Sometimes I
have to spend 20 minutes waiting for it, but sometimes it comes in
less than 5 minutes when I get to the bus station. It’s confusing
and annoying.”

A Day in Nicolas’ Life
Nicolas is now studying at Chinese University of Hong Kong in a
regular lifestyle. He gets up at 9am. After taking a shower, he
catches the shuttle bus at 10:00 am and has breakfast at one of
the canteens in main campus. After 3 hours doing his research in
his office, he will choose a canteen to have lunch. And the whole
afternoon and evening will be spent on the office. For the
waiting time for supper, he will visit Sina Weibo for information
updates. He will go back to dormitory after 9:00pm to watch
some online videos and chat online via Skype or QQ with parents
and friends.
He pays little attention to the school activities. He will check his
emails about the opinions from the mentor about his work and
learn about the academic speech or lectures to come in the
university. He noticed the posters in the university but find little
interest in participating those activities. He is keen on doing his
own research and getting the most updated progress in his
research field.
