Editor's Notes

  1. Why are the Caldecott Award books and the Red Clover books important to you? Well, for starters, they are winners!
  2. I thought writers were the only ones who were honored for their work? Why should artists be awarded for a book? What do they have to offer the story?
  3. Why is the Red Clover Award something you can be proud of? It's your voice, your votes, that count! What does your vote tell someone else? Only students from Vermont are allowed to vote. Only who read, or have the books read to them, can vote. Only Kindergartners, First , Second, Third and Fourth graders. No teachers. No Librarians. No adults, at all!
  4. How would a book get chosen for the Red Clover list? Well, it has to be good to start with, maybe even great! What do you like to get from a book?
  5. Hugo Cabret was on the Dorothy Canfield Fisher list for fourth through eighth graders. Flotsam was on the Red Clover list. Both won the Caldecott medal in different years. Show both books and flip through them briefly. Let class vote which they think was liked best by Vermont students.
  6. What does this book have which we talked about earlier? Anything else?
  7. Play the youtube video.
  8. Show the books, flip through them. In students eyes, what is missing from Hello, Goodbye Window? Why would adults think this is such a great artistic book? Can they tell?
  9. Show both books, flip through them briefly. What makes Knuffle Bunny so special? Let the kids explain.
  10. show both books, flip through them briefly. Let the kids vote Pigeon won. It was Mo Willem's first win for Red Clover. He won again the next year for Knuffle Bunny.
  11. Make your voice heard. Does your vote count even if your favorite doesn't win? Of Course!!!
