1. Jumping on a horse for the first time
It was a reasonably warm day, no clouds in the sky, and I was
going to be learning to jump on a horse at our neighbours farm
for the very first time.
I arrived at our neighbours in good time, I tacked up Duke with
my instructor Meg, hopped on Duke and headed out to the
training paddock.
Meg set up some tyres and I walked, trotted and cantered around
them for about and hour, perfecting my trot on the left rein.
Once Meg was convinced my positioning in the saddle was right
and that Duke was responding to my leg signals properly, she
started setting up a jump with about five trotting poles in front.
Duke and I then trotted around the jump and trotting poles to get
into a rhythm, then on about the third circle, we turned in front of
the jump, my stomach swirling with butterflies.
Before we trotted over the first pole, I rose up so I was crouched
in the saddle. I grabbed Duke’s mane for balance, and, as we
trotted over the last pole I felt him rise underneath me, land on
the other side then canter on. I lent back slightly, pulled in the
reins and hauled Duke to a stop.
“Rosie, Rosie, Rosie! You just jumped for the first time ever!!!
Woohoo!” I heard Meg yell as she ran over to me, smiling from
ear to ear. I have to say, I couldn’t stop smiling from ear to ear
either, and I couldn’t wait for her to raise the jump!
