Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting. Fasting during Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and is obligatory for all adult Muslims except those who are ill, traveling, pregnant, breastfeeding or diabetic. Muslims fast from dawn to sunset and abstain from food, drink, smoking and sexual relations. The month lasts 29-30 days based on the visual sightings of the crescent moon and fasting is believed to offer spiritual rewards during this holy month, which typically includes increased prayers and recitation of the Quran.
