Relevant Reasons for High Speed Trains in India
The foremost significant reason to be emphasized is to allow spread of wealth
more fairly all over the globe in this age of collaboration and globalization by making sure that
different parts of the country are much more quickly connected with each other.
Secondly, the high speed rail transport has become more relevant in present scenario of global
warming and environmental concerns, as it consumes almost one-fifth of the fuel in comparison to
air travel and can be faster and more convenient than the later one in ways more than one.

The first railway on Indian sub-continent ran over a stretch of 21 miles from
Bombay to Thane. Today Indian Railways runs approximately 11,000 trains
everyday, out which 7,000 are passenger trains.
Last but not the least, high speed rail transport, unlike air travel, is not merely dependent on fossil
fuel alone, rather all the alternate and renewable energy sources can be tapped and utilized
judiciously. High speed rail has a great future ahead and would surely touch the pinnacles of
excellence and success.
As per today’s scenario, we believe that “it is need of the hour that at the spur of the moment, we
must not solely rely on one part of the country or one sector.

And henceforth in my view point, high speed rail is absolutely crucial to that longer term
vision of a more balanced as well as more stable economy.”
In my opinion “High-Speed trains are feasible and necessary for India” and after analyzing
the current economical conditions it is found that “If India is looking at a GDP growth rate
of 5 per cent, the present rail infrastructure is fine, but if it wants to grow by 9 per cent, it
needs the high-speed rail networks.”

The Kalka-Shimla Railway is a 2'6' (762mm)
narrow gauge railway in North-West India
travelling along a mostly mountainous route
from Kalka to Shimla.
It offers a panoramic feast of the picturesque
Himalayas from the shivalik foot hills at
Kalka to several important points such as
Dharampur, Solan, Kandaghat,
Taradevi, Barog, Salogra, Summer hill
and Shimla at an altitude of 2076 meters.

Kalka-Shimla-Railway runs through 102 tunnels, some of which have
hoary tales to tell.
Bridge No. 226; between Sonwara and Dharampur is an arch gallery
bridge having 5 tier galleries of multiple spans, constructed with stone
masonry and bridging a deep valley surrounded by high peaks. The
railway has a ruling gradient of 1 in 25 with 919 curves, the sharpest being
48 degrees. Climbing from 656 meters, the line ends at 2076 meters at Shimla.
Bridge No. 493, 541 historically known as the "Arch Gallery", situated between Kandaghat and
Kanoh stations, is an arch bridge in three stages, constructed with stone masonry that stands good
even today.
The line has 864 bridges, only one of which is a 60 feet plate girder span and a steel truss. The
others are viaducts with multi-arched galleries like the ancient Roman aqueducts.
