The Roman army developed advanced siege tactics and artillery to overcome fortified positions. They would construct protective shelters and ramps to get battering rams and siege towers close to city walls. Artillery such as catapults, ballistae, and onagers were also used to breach walls from a distance by launching stones and other projectiles with great force.
