Product Design Trends in 2024 | Teenage EngineeringsPixeldarts
The realm of product design is a constantly changing environment where technology and style intersect. Every year introduces fresh challenges and exciting trends that mold the future of this captivating art form. In this piece, we delve into the significant trends set to influence the look and functionality of product design in the year 2024.
How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

The performance of Varilux Comfort is largely due to the patented technology introduced with its design. Three patents were awarded to the design technology introduced with Varilux Comfort. These three patents have been incorporated into subsequent Varilux designs- but have created challenges for competing manufacturers of progressive addition lenses. It is difficult to design a PAL which will even compete with Varilux Comfort’s performance (let alone exceed the performance) without violating the patents held by the Varilux designers.
One of the most profound patents awarded to Varilux Comfort is the variation of progression in response to unique ADD powers. Basically, the concept behind “multi-design.” Note the three distinct intermediate lines (section between cross and the circle) on the graph representing Varilux Comfort. Varilux designers discovered that patients with higher ADD powers require a progression in which ADD power progresses more rapidly in the upper portions. As the chart indicates, a Varilux Comfort +3.00 ADD has a more aggressive power progression in the upper portions. Conversely, a +1.00 ADD progresses less rapidly through the intermediate. Due to the restriction this patent places on other lens designers, many “newer” PAL designs do not feature this technology (on the right is an example of a lens launched after 2001- which exhibits a mono-design). Note the single line in the intermediate area of PAL X. To better understand the concept of mono-design, consider that a bifocal lens is the ultimate in mono-design (there is no progression of power- regardless of ADD there is a sudden jump from 0% to 100% of the ADD).
Varilux Comfort was also awarded a patent for variation of the reading zone inset. Again, many competitive PALs claim to have this feature- but in fact few PAL designs (outside of Varilux) have a variable inset of the near addition. The importance of variable inset is related to the placement of the near zone in front of the eye’s path while reading. Prismatic effects- as well as differences in reading distance- dictate different levels of convergence when performing near vision tasks. That is, the higher the ADD power, the closer you have to hold reading material. The closer you hold reading material, the more your eyes have to converge (or cross). By varying the near inset, Varilux Comfort ensures reading power is properly positioned in front of both eyes- thus increasing binocular vision while reading (i.e., your eyes work together better).
Prior to becoming presbyopic, patients tend to look down when reading. Look at the floor without moving your head, and you’ll quickly find it uncomfortable- you want to point your head where you’re looking. Reading is the same way- the pre-presbyope’s head is usually tilted down about 45 degrees when reading. Most PALs require the patient to reduce the downward head tilt- relying more heavily on downward eye rotation. This is unnatural and uncomfortable. Varilux Comfort restores the ability to head at the near object- thus providing more natural, comfortable vision.
Most PALs require the wearer to change his/her visual behaviors (and people generally resist change). Many an optician has advised patients to “Look down with your eyes- not your head- when using your new progressives.” This advice literally goes against a visual habit the patient has spent 40+ years developing. Since its launch, Varilux Comfort has been the most popular PAL design in the world. Patented technology ensures Varilux Comfort remains a premium PAL design. Varilux Comfort is exceptionally forgiving of fitting anomalies and wearing styles. Varilux Comfort works- period.

Traditional surfacing relies on a series of base curves to create the power range of a lens series. Tschering’s Ellipse model is used to ensure a proper base curve selection which will minimize marginal astigmatism and sphere error. However, each base curve will have only one power for which these aberrations are at “optimal” (i.e. minimal) levels.
As powers move farther from each base curve’s optimal power, levels of marginal astigmatism begin to increase. Although the lens is on the “best possible” base curve, there will be certain levels of marginal astigmatism and other aberrations in the lens. For example, the red color for the power -3.75 = - 0.75 cyl (four blocks to the right of -3.75) indicates there will be a certain amount of marginal astigmatism when that power is generated on a 4.00 base curve lens. 4.00 is still the “best” base curve for that power, however (a 6.00 base would produce even more marginal astigmatism and would have a darker red square).
Because digital surfacing allows for the use of aspheric/atoric (non-spherical) surfaces, marginal astigmatism and other aberrations may be greatly reduced/eliminated across the power range. In fact, one can theoretically use a “non-optimal” base curve and use digital surfacing to optimize the lens and regain optical performance. This is true of virtually all digitally surfaced lenses and is being employed to provide lenses for “wrap” frames without compromising optical performance.
A primary limitation of traditional surfacing is that we use rigid tooling. These tools limit the type of surface that can be placed on a traditionally surfaced lens. Customarily, even a modernized traditional laboratory will have tooling in 0.10 diopter increments. Furthermore, tooling is usually calibrated to a 1.530 index of refraction. Since many lenses are made of higher indices, this means the tools gaps are even greater than 0.10 diopters.
The limitation this imposes on the accuracy of traditionally surfaced lenses is easy to demonstrate. For example, a lab may wish to create a -1.75 single vision lens from a 1.59 (poly) material. The job is run through the laboratory management system (LMS), which indicates the optimal backside curvature for would be 4.45 diopters. However, the lab does not have a rigid tool with that exact power- the closest tools are 4.40 and 4.50. So, the LMS chooses the closest tool.
As a result of choosing a tool that is flatter than the optimal curvature, the lens is 0.07 diopters weak (remember, the material is 1.59, but the tooling is calibrated to 1.530- so errors will be magnified).
Digital surfacing does not rely on a set of rigid tools, so any curvature can be created (for any index). Therefore, the digitally surfaced lens will theoretically be within 0.01 diopter of the requested power. Manufacturers who claim “6x greater accuracy” for digitally surfaced products are comparing the 0.01 diopter accuracy inherent to digital surfacing to the 0.06 diopter accuracy inherent to traditional surfacing. Again, this a benefit common to virtually all digital surfacing processes.
360 Digital Surfacing™ technology incorporates additional design calculations into the digital surfacing process. Using a patented calculation process, Varilux designers are able to match the back surfaces of 360 products to the front surface design. As a result, the visual fields are widened in all zones. Although 360 Digital Surfacing™ technology also provides the two benefits just discussed (optimal optics and accuracy), the matching of front and backside optics is completely unique to 360 Digital Surfacing™ technology.
To demonstrate how the design component of 360 Digital Surfacing™ works, consider this example. The front surface of a PAL has an intended (optimal) design. This design includes areas of unwanted astigmatism which have been carefully positioned by the designer to provide optimal performance. However, the designer has no control over astigmatism and other errors which may appear on the back surface of the lens (because these depend upon the power of the distance portion of the prescription). In this case, the back surface has 1.50 diopters of astigmatism- which will interact and alter the total optical effect produced by the lens.
Advans Digital Surfacing™ employs a patented design calculation to consider the combined effects of the front and back surfaces together. Taking advantage of the ability of digital surfacing process to produce aspheric/atoric/irregular surfaces, the design component of 360 Digital Surfacing™ creates a unique back surface which works with the front surface to provide an optical effect that preserves the design’s optimal parameters. For any lens with distance power, this will result in wider fields of vision in all zones.
