Amanda Huei Ju Thong conducted chemical research under Associate Professor Robert Speight for 10 weeks between August and October 2014. The research involved identifying fungi that can grow on lignin as a sole carbon source and conducting enzymatic assays. Amanda worked independently for two weeks further experimenting on the subject. Throughout the internship, Amanda displayed a high level of diligence in learning techniques like cell culture, DNA extraction, and polymerase chain reaction. Professor Speight believes Amanda is dedicated, hard-working, and interested in pursuing a future career in science.

Dear Sir/Madam,
I had the pleasure of engaging Amanda as my student for 10 weeks between 1st August
2014 to 31st October 2014. This was during Amanda’s second semester in her third year of
pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Science (Forensic Chemistry) from the
Queensland University of Technology.
Amanda was responsible for the following:
• Conduct of a chemical research project leading to the identification of fungi able to
grow on lignin as a sole carbon source and enzymatic essays under my tutelage;
following this, she was required to write a 25-page report as the research output.
• During the course of 10 weeks, Amanda worked independently for 2 weeks to further
experiment on the subject
The knowledge and experience Amanda acquired during her research with me included
learning different biological and chemical techniques/methods and how to operate
equipment. Techniques included growth medium preparation and cell culture, cell isolation,
DNA extraction, isolation and sequencing, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) protocols, and
laccase enzymatic essays.
Throughout her internship, Amanda displayed a high level of conscientiousness in ensuring
that she conducted all the activities required of the research according to the instructions
and the time-frame given. Her enthusiasm and extra effort allowed her to pick up new
techniques in a short timeframe.
Amanda is a dedicated and hard-working individual and has proven to me her keen interest
in furthering her knowledge and skills in this field. Both her academic results and
behavioural competencies support her pursuit of a future career in science.
