Whole genome sequencing will be used to categorize isolates into biotypes and create phylogenies to determine if the rising numbers are due to increased diversity or expansion of a particular biotype. Experiments will link bacterial genotype to phenotype to assess potential pathogenicity, as V. vulnificus can cause infections but infection rates have not increased despite rising bacteria levels. Understanding the genetic and phenotypic properties of these isolates may provide insight into their potential pathogenicity and why their populations are increasing in the estuary.
