Pupilary light reflex

1. Pupil evaluation

2.  Static pupil evaluations refer to the
measurement of the pupil size under
constant stimulus condition.
 Dynamic pupil evaluations refer to the
measurement of changes in the pupil size
with changes in stimulus conditions.

3. Direct pupillary light response
 Have the patient to fixate a distance
target in a room illuminated.
 Shine the light in the pupil of the right
eye and observe the amount of change in
the size of the pupil(quantity), and the
speed of change in the size of the pupil
(quality).
 Record the change in the size of the pupil

4. Indirect (consensual) pupillary light
responce
 Have the patient to fixate a distance
target in a room illuminated.
 Shine a light in the pupil of the left eye
and observe the amount of change in
the size of the pupil in the right eye and
speed of change.
 Record the chage in the size of the
pupil.

5. The pupillary near(accommodative)
responce
 Have the patient to fixate a distance target in
a room illuminated.
 Quickly place a target (small picture or
letters)at about 25cm in front of the right eye
and slightly lower than the distance target ,
and ask the patient to look at the near
target.
 Record the change in size and speed of the
pupil.
