Product Design Trends in 2024 | Teenage EngineeringsPixeldarts
The realm of product design is a constantly changing environment where technology and style intersect. Every year introduces fresh challenges and exciting trends that mold the future of this captivating art form. In this piece, we delve into the significant trends set to influence the look and functionality of product design in the year 2024.
How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

„Ik heb net al even stiekem naar
binnen gegluurd. Dat kan ik echt
niet laten hoor. Beroepsdeforma-
tie”, bekent Harriët Bödicker. Ze
lacht hartelijk. Open en alerte blik.
Niets ontgaat haar.
„Even gedag zeggen.” Ze is
direct. What you see is what you
get. „Ik speel geen toneelstukjes,
nee zeg.”
De Bussumse is dit jaar precies
twintig jaar buitengewoon ambte-
naar van de burgerlijke stand
(babs). Trouwambtenaar dus. Of
’trouwmevrouw’ zoals ze zichzelf
het liefst noemt. Vanaf 1 januari
voltrekt ze huwelijken voor de
nieuwe gemeente Gooise Meren.
„Een leuke nieuwe uitdaging.” Met
haar bedrijf julliehuwelijksambte-
naar.nl, was ze acht jaar geleden
een van de eersten in Nederland
die als zzp’er als zelfstandig trou-
wambtenaar begon. Een sprong in
het diepe die succesvol is gebleken.
In die twintig jaar sloot ze ruim
1800 huwelijken.
Hockeyveld
Van een bruiloft komt een bruiloft.
Dat geldt zeker voor Harriët Bödic-
ker.
wambtenaar. Van Naarden tot
Barcelona en van Texel tot Venetië.
Op het strand, in het filmhuis, in
een achtertuin of op het hockey-
veld. Niets is onmogelijk. Ze
trouwde bekende mensen (’Nee ik
noem geen namen’) en terminaal
zieken.
En ieder huwelijk is voor haar weer
even bijzonder. Op de automati-
sche piloot een paar in de echt
verbinden; ze gruwelt bij de ge-
dachte. „Het gaat die dag niet om
mij”, zegt ze nadrukkelijk. „Dat
lijkt misschien voor de hand te
liggen, maar je moest eens weten.
Er zijn veel trouwambtenaren die
zichzelf heel belangrijk vinden
hoor. Ik zet het bruidspaar cen-
traal, niet mezelf. Het is geen on-
emanshow, geen cabaret. Zij bepa-
len wat er gebeurt. Het is hun dag.
Ik respecteer alles. Het bruidspaar
moet zó’n ceremonie krijgen dat ze
na 25 jaar zeggen: ’Die heeft het
begrepen’. Dan ben ik tevreden.”
Dat wil niet zeggen dat ze nooit
haar wenkbrauw optrekt bij een
wens. „Mensen die bijvoorbeeld
per se willen trouwen op oudjaars-
dag. En dan ook nog op een locatie
aan de andere kant van het land.
Wat doe je je gasten aan om op die
dag te trouwen? Maar het is hun
keuze. Soms adviseer ik om het
anders te doen. Subtiel natuurlijk.”
Zoals die keer dat een paar heel
graag haar overleden moeder bij de
huwelijksvoltrekking wilden be-
trekken. „Ze hadden bedacht dat er
een grote ingelijste foto van moe-
der op de lege stoel naast haar
vader moest komen. Prachtig idee
ten. De foto heeft een mooi plekje
gekregen. Goed zichtbaar en vader
zat tussen de familie.”
Hoofdluis
Harriët Bödicker werd twintig jaar
geleden door een vriendin geatten-
deerd op de mogelijkheid om trou-
wambtenaar te worden. „Ze vond
het echt iets voor mij. Ik had er tot
die tijd nooit over nagedacht. Ik
zocht een uitdaging naast het
moederschap. De keuze om thuis te
blijven bij mijn twee kinderen had
ik heel bewust gemaakt. Leuk hoor,
koekjes bakken, voorlezen en naar
hoofdluis speuren op school, maar
ik wilde na een aantal jaren weer
met één voet in de maatschappij
staan. Ik hou van uitdagingen, wil
niet steeds in hetzelfde rondje
blijven draaien.”
Trouwambtenaar leek haar meteen
geweldig. „Ik hou van mensen, van
verbinden en van ’klets’. Ik hou van
dingen die anderen niet doen.” Ze
maakte een afspraak met het hoofd
van de afdeling burgerzaken in
Naarden. Ze werd hartelijk uitgela-
chen toen ze haar wens kenbaar
maakte. „Trouwambtenaren, dat
waren de vrouwen van de notabe-
len. De vrouw van de wethouder.”
Toen even later een van de trou-
wambtenaren minder ging werken
Naarden.
Texel
Engeland bent. De wind in je ha-
ren, de zon op je gezicht. Even
alles loslaten. Ze trouwt er ieder
jaar een flink aantal paren. Vaak op
het strand.
Bruidsparen van nu zijn kritisch,
ervaart Harriët Bödicker. „Soms
gaan ze shoppen. Eerst langs bij
drie trouwambtenaren voor ze
beslissen. Prima. Ze moeten degene
kiezen die het best in hun plaatje
past. Ben ik dat niet? Geen pro-
bleem. Ik hou niet van achter-
docht, van wantrouwen en negati-
visme. Gewoon alles met open
vizier doen.”
Zelf trouwde ze in 1983 in Apel-
doorn. Een klassieke bruiloft.
„Door te trouwen zeg je ’we horen
bij elkaar’. Het is een heel duidelij-
ke keuze. Voor de komst van kin-
deren hoef je het niet te doen. Je
kunt tegenwoordig alles ook prima
regelen zonder huwelijk. Ik herin-
ner me alles nog van mijn trouw-
dag. Een geweldige dag, met de
leukste man. De mooiste dag van
mijn leven? Zeg nooit dat het de
mooiste dag van je leven is. Want
daarmee zeg je dat er nooit meer
een mooiere dag zal komen. Dat is
geen fijn vooruitzicht.”
Spanning
Harriët bereidt ieder huwelijk
grondig voor. Ze voert uitgebreide
gesprekken met het aanstaande
bruidspaar. Nodigt ze bij haar
thuis uit en serveert dan koffie
vaak met taart in hartjesvorm. „Ze
moeten zich vertrouwd bij mij
voelen. Het is zo’n belangrijke dag
voor ze. Een dag die bol kan staan
van spanning. Je hebt het nooit
eerder gedaan. Sta je ineens in het
middelpunt van de belangstelling.
Alles moet kloppen. Ik help ze
daarmee. Zijn er kinderen en krij-
gen die een rol? Gaan jullie nog
iets tegen elkaar zeggen? Wat doe
je de avond ervoor? In Amerika
wordt de ceremonie uitgebreid
gerepeteerd. Hier niet. Gek eigen-
lijk.
trouwen laten we alles gewoon
over ons heen komen.”
Mensen willen graag
horrorverhalen horen. Het is puur
leedvermaak. Trouwen gaat om
diepgang, om passie. Weet je wat
leuk is? Afgelopen zomer heb ik de
negende van een vriendengroep
mogen trouwen. En in september
voltrek ik een bijzonder huwelijk.
De bruidegom was getuige op de
bruiloft van zijn broer en zei ’we
willen jou’.”
gemeente Gooise Meren. Ieder huwelijk is voor haar
even bijzonder. „Mensen horen graag
horrorverhalen, maar trouwen gaat om passie, niet
om leedvermaak.”
