Primary Responsibilities / Project Description:
You will be rotatingamongst 5 areas duringyourBusiness Internship
to educate you and involveyou in multiple facets of communitybank
management. Note that Audit and Credit Analysis rotation dates may
be swapped. Specifically,you will be performingthe followingduties:
i. Week 1: Understanding& AnalyzingBankPerformance (6/6 –
6/10)
1. Spend a one-halfdaywith Human Resources completingthe
bank’s Orientation process on yourfirst day with the bankcompleting
the necessarypaperwork,learninghow to use the bank’s timekeeping
system and learningabout essential personnel policies.
2. Attend the bank’s Introduction to Prairie State Bank& Trust
Orientation on Wednesday,June 8th. Complete the pre-class
assignment.
3. Analyze the performance of Prairie State Bank & Trust as
compared to local competition,and as compared to nationalpeer
banks.
4. Learn and run report specificallyidentifyingareas where Prairie
State Bank& Trust’s performance exceeds and falls short of peer
banks,then formulatingideas and strategies to improvethe bank’s
performance short and long term in deficient areas.
5. Learn the budgetingprocess for Prairie State Bank& Trust and
compare the bank’s performance for the year-to-date to budget for
the bankoverall and for each of the bank’s branches and regions. As
part of this, prepare a summaryreport to flag areas where
performance is notable, and areas where performance needs
improvement.
6. Watch the movie “The Big Short” if you’ve not alreadyseen it, and
do research on how some banks (thankfullynot ours)contributedto
the 2007/2008 economic downturn. Learn about the systems now in
place to ensure banks don’t engage in such high risk activities.
ii. Week 2: FacilityManagement,Security Management & Supply
Management (6/13 – 6/17)
1. Learn about the bank’s Security Program, Facilities Management
activities and SupplyManagement processes.
2. Travel with the bank’s Security & Facilities Manager to meetings
and facilities on security, and to monitorthe status of construction
projects in progress.
3. Learn how construction projects are identified,plannedand
monitored.
4. Assist with the implementationofthe bank’s bulksupplyordering
system, and understand the analysisand rationale that went into the
decision.
iii. Weeks 3 and 4: Property Evaluations,includingMarket Analysis
(6/20 – 7/1)
1. Work with the bank’s In-House Property Evaluatorto perform
propertyevaluations on properties beingfinanced in conjunctionwith
new loan requests,and on bankforeclosed properties.
2. Learn how the PropertyEvaluatoranalyzes market conditions,
and the tools used.
3. Understand the Appraisaland Evaluationlaws.
4. Review varying types of evaluations,includingfarmland,
commercial properties,residential owner-occupiedproperties,and
residential rental properties and learn the factors influencingspecific
propertyvalues.
5. Do research to investigate the current market conditions for
farmland in the bank’s primaryAgricultural markets.
6. Do research to investigate the current market conditions for
rental real estate in the bank’s markets that are highlydependent on
universitystudent housing.
7. Assist with the documentation and analysis ofspecific property
valuations.
iv. Weeks 5 and 6: Auditing(7/5 – 7/15)
1. Review the bank’s externallyprepared financialaudit.
2. Gain an understandingof the bank’s internal audit program.
3. Review prior audit programs.
4. Follow up on outstandingaudit report responses.
5. Review the bank’s Board Audit Committee packet to gain an
understand ofthe role of a bank’s Board of Directors in ensuring
appropriateaudit and control processes are in place.
6. Participate in the performance and preparation ofa specific audit,
likelythe bank’s ACH Audit.
7. If time allows,perform bankcash count audits.
v. Weeks 7 and 8: Credit Analysis (7/18 – 7/29)
1. Review and understandthe bank’s lendingpolicies and risk
philosophies.
2. Work with the bank’s SeniorCredit Officer to understandthe
processes by which credit qualityis managed and monitored.
3. Learn the credit analysis process and perform the credit analysis
and prepare the summaryanalysis reports on some large bank
credits. Duringthis process, you will assess the risks, determine
whether such risks are acceptable based on the bank’s risk
philosophies,identifythe strengths and weaknesses of the credits
reviewed.
4. Review the Springapproval analysis and documentation forfarm
loan relationships,then participate in the summer Farm visits.
vi. Monday,August 1st
1. Return to the ACB office and complete the internshipwrap-up
session.
9) Workplace Overview Description:
a. You will be working in a two professional commercial office
settings and in a commercial bankfacility. A description ofthe
facilities is as follows:
i. Commercial Office Facility – American Central Bancorporation,Inc.
Bank HoldingCompanyCorporate office located at 3300 Hedley Rd,
Springfield,IL 62711 houses 12 staff members.
ii. Commercial Office Facility – Prairie State Bank & Trust Operations
office located at 2653 West Lawrence Ave., Springfield,IL 62704
houses approximately40bank staffmembers.
iii. Prairie State Bank & Trust Commercial Bankingoffice located at
3751 West Wabash Ave.,Springfield,IL 62711 houses approximately
20 staff members.
b. You will be workingwith Auditors,Accountants,Property
Evaluators,Commercial Loan Analysts and other company
managers. The specific individuals you will be working with include:
i. Lori Spillers,General Manager & ChiefLending Officer, American
Central Bancorporation
ii. Amy Raftis, Facilities & Security Manager, Prairie State Bank &
Trust
