Prometheus was a Titan who invented humanity and defied Zeus by returning fire to humans after Zeus had taken it away. As punishment, Zeus had Prometheus chained to a rock in the Caucasus mountains. Centuries later, Heracles freed Prometheus from his chains. Prometheus has since inspired many artists, writers and musicians in their works depicting his acts of defiance against Zeus and his punishment.
