Bapele Engineered Energy Solutions (BEES) is a South African engineering firm specializing in renewable energy, sustainability, earthing, lightning protection, and electrical services. BEES was founded by three women directors with decades of combined experience. BEES aims to provide safe, innovative solutions through services like carbon audits, solar installation, energy management, and earthing/lightning protection system design, installation, and certification. 2. About Us
Bapele Engineered Energy Solutions 1 Pty (Ltd) is a level 2 BBBee, 100% female, majority Black
Woman Owned EME Company. The BEES team has experience across multiple sectors including
Energy, Sustainability, Natural Resources (Mining, Metals etc.), Technologies (ICT), Infrastructure,
and Commercial Sector within multiple industries.
The Directors of BEES as women and mothers have the natural instinct to protect and have carried
that passion across into the formation of BEES with the prime focus being on the environment through
clean energy, sustainability and people through ensuring that earthing & lightning protection systems
meet the minimum requirement in terms of relevant standards as prescribed in the industry.
BEES is affiliated with Carbon Check as the only UN accredited auditor in Africa, UL (Underwriters
Laboratory) and ELPA the Earthing and Lightning Protection Association of South Africa which enable
BEES to carry out independent audits and provide services that ensure compliance.
The Directors:
Hulunn Choo has over six (6) years’ in the energy sector, trained as an Energy & Carbon Auditor in
a variety of fields, with experience in Energy Management for carbon projects, carbon budget
reporting, carbon credit registration and is a green journalist.
Belinda Holtzkamp has in excess of twenty five (25) years’ experience in administrative and
commercial functions across retail, wholesale (FMCG, Electrical, Beverage Sectors) and mega-
projects, including cost engineering, project controls, buying, project management, contract
administration and management across multiple industries.
Elva Visser has in excess of thirty (30) years’ experience in the earthing and lightning industry
servicing multiple sectors including, mining, industrial, domestic and transportation, and has also been
an active partner in a family owned earthing and lightning protection company.

DIVISION: EARTHING, LIGHTNING, CATHODIC AND SURGE PROTECTION:
Mike Visser, Technical Lead has over 35 years’ experience, educated at Bucknell University,
USA, training courses at Witwatersrand University, Stellenbosch University, Council for Industrial
and Scientific Research (CSIR), South African Bureau of Standards (SABS), and LEC USA. Mike
is the Chairperson and Founder of ELPA (Earthing & Lightning Protection Association of South
Africa). Founded to promote lightning safety, protection, education and compliance. ELPA is
dedicated to ensuring that lightning protection systems maintain the best possible quality in design,
materials and installation. ELPA support lightning protection in accordance with the South African
National Standards (SANS) and the promotion of quality control and assurance through third-party
inspection. Mike Visser has been presenting seminars on earthing and lightning protection country
wide since1993. In addition Mike has developed a number of systems to ensure quality of
workmanship in all areas.
Geoffrey Powell, Senior Consultant has over 20 years’ experience, mentored by Mike Visser, trained
in terms of SANS and Underwriters Laboratory Lightning Protection Inspection Certificate (UL has
been testing and certifying lightning protection equipment since 1908. UL’s lightning protection
inspection certificate indicates that a lightning protection system has been rigorously tested to provide
maximum protection for building exteriors). Geoffrey has designed numerous Tier 1 systems including
a system for the Venetia Underground Project (Anglo American – De Beers – Venetia Diamond Mine).

electrochemical cell by placing in contact with the metal to be protected, and another more
easily corroded sacrificial metal to act as the anode of the electrochemical cell.

Replacing systems with energy efficiencies is the quickest way to save money. Audits performed on
where those saving lie, and to establish your baseline for future saving or tax incentives.
Under an energy service level agreement to increase efficiencies in the use of electricity as well as
monitoring and management and full assistance as project manager with the implementation of certain
efficiency or renewable energy projects.
Energy Management Policies & Energy plans
Businesses with a total annual energy consumption of over 180 T will have to report on their energy
consumption every year before the end of April. Bigger users, consuming more than 400 T a year,
must submit an immediate energy plan, updated every five years. The plan must include a baseline,
areas of potential energy savings, energy performance indicators and a list of measures that can be
taken, with timelines for achieving them.
