How many times have you been outside and one of your friends pulls out a volleyball? Do you get embarrassed at your lack of basic skills? Do you truly want to improve? No worries. Fundamental volleyball skills are both easy and practicable for all ages, particularly teens. The ability to bump, serve, and spike a volleyball will truly amaze your friends as well as yourself.
Who knows, with enough practice you might even try out for your school’s volleyball team. To learn more about how to properly play this enjoyable sport, grab a volleyball and follow along in the process.
Before beginning the process, you must first gather the material needed to continue. In order to play volleyball effectively and with ease, wear a loose cotton t-shirt and a pair of shorts or spandex. Also, make sure you have proper shoes to play in. Tight fitting running shoes are perfect for this sport or any other type of sports shoes will do for now.
In addition to this, volleyball players usually wear knee pads in order to protect the knees while sliding or diving for the ball in a game situation, for instance. Lastly, don’t forget a volleyball!
Without further a due, volleyball is a sport with many different skills and techniques alike. One of the most crucial skills necessary in order to become a successful volleyball player is the ability to bump a ball.
Bumping a ball can be a difficult task for some people, however, if you pay close attention to these simple tricks and hints, bumping will become an extremely straightforward and enjoyable skill.
Before we begin, make sure you are in an enclosed area, such as a gym. A gym is the most reasonable location to practice these volleyball skills since proper gymnasiums have clearly marked end-lines that can be referred to while practicing. Now that we’ve talked about the best place to practice these skills, let’s move on to how to perform a successful bump.
Firstly, set the volleyball aside for now. Make sure that your feet are shoulder length apart and that both your knees are bent. This may seem uncomfortable at first, but sooner or later, this position will come easy and almost unnoticed to you. Following this, extend both of your arms or elbows in front of you.
Secondly, cup your hands by placing your right hand over your left hand and make sure your right and left thumbs are parallel to one another.
As soon as you feel confident about the positioning, have a friend stand on the far side of the court and throw the ball across the court. Once again, bend your knees and extend your arms. Then, use your arms and legs for both strength and accuracy, sending the ball upwards.
Moving on, in order to proceed you must have a net in front of you and if necessary, a partner to assist you. Similarly, serving also includes essential techniques such as good posture and positioning or angling of the body, such as your arms and legs.
Now I will start by explaining the under-handed serve. There are two main types of serves in volleyball. Personally, the easiest to learn and master is the under-handed serve. To start with, make sure you know where to stand. Step behind a thick and clear line called the “end-line”. This is where all serves are performed in a game situation.
If you are right handed, first place your left foot in front of your right foot. Similarly, extend your left arm so that it is parallel to the floor beneath you. Just as if you were about the throw a ball left-handed, hold the ball in the palm of your left hand. Instantly, angle or position your body in the direction you intend the ball to travel onto the court or on your opponent’s side.
As soon as you have positioned yourself, carefully bring your right hand behind your body as if it is parallel to the floor, once again. Make sure that it is in a straight line behind you. Similar to the bump, bend your body and make a fist with your right hand. Before swinging your arm with power, make sure you release the ball with your left hand.
After this, remember to swing your arm in a straight line and contact the ball in the middle. As soon as you have hit the ball, make sure your foot did not cross the end-line. If it did, this is considered a foul in a game situation.
Now that we’ve discussed the best forms in producing a bump as well as an under-handed serve, let’s discuss the ways to perform a successful spike, or hit, as some people refer to it. Similarly, the spike also calls for good posture. On the other hand, the spike requires more upper body strength than lower body strength, such as the bump.
Initially, bring your right foot forward then take a step with your left foot. Now that both your feet are together, use your leg strength to jump as high as possible.
Consequently, bring your right arm back behind your body and make sure your elbow is not too far back.
After this, open your hand wide and make it as firm as you can and contact the ball in the middle with as much power as necessary in order for the ball to hit the floor of the opponent’s side. As I mentioned before, you hand must be firm, however, as soon as you contact the ball, make sure to snap your wrist. By doing this, send the ball downwards at a steep angle.
All together, we have seen and experienced how to perform three different skills. We have gained knowledge about the techniques needed as well as the most essential ‘rules’ to keep in mind while playing this particular sport.
Remember to always keep in mind a few hints and tricks while playing this particular sport. Therefore, posture is everything. If you lack good posture, your technique will neither be accurate nor successful. Nevertheless, always bend your knees and stay low to the ground. This way, you are always prepared to receive any type of play. In addition to this, we also discussed the importance of having a firm hand during hitting.
In spite of all these rules, I hope that by the end of this video you are able to repeat the several processes on your own time and enjoy a competitive game of volleyball, which includes bumps, serves, and hits! In conclusion, always remember that it is you choice of whether you want to improve or not. Don’t ever be discouraged. Perform at the highest of your ability and you can achieve anything you aspire.
