Problems of Promiscuity
1. Problems of Promiscuity
Nijah Richardson
South Carolina State University is a typical school with sexually curious students. Most
incoming students of SC State have no problem finding their crowd of friends. Before long
students are going out to parties and meeting attractive students. One thing leads to another and
eventually students engage in sexual intercourse. Out of the entire nation, SC has some of the
highest case rates for gonorrhea, syphilis, chlamydia and HIV/AIDS. College students are at high
risk of contracting an STD and don’t even know it.
More often than not students engage in unprotected sex. Most times, students are too
drunk to remember or even care to use protection. Some students feel that the consequences of
unprotected sex aren't likely to happen to him or her but the statistics say otherwise. SC ranks 9th
in the nation for HIV/AIDS. Columbia ranks 6th among all US metropolitan areas for
HIV/AIDS. In 2010, 50% of individuals who contracted chlamydia were between the ages of 20-
29. 30% were between the ages of 0-19. As of 2010, 50% of individuals who contracted
chlamydia were black. As for gonorrhea, the age percentage remained the same as chlamydia.
The percentage of blacks who have contracted gonorrhea is 60%. The percentage of blacks who
have contracted syphilis is 76% (South Carolina’s STD/HIV/AIDS Data, SCDHEC). These
statistics are frightening considering SCSU is an HBCU. Orangeburg ranks 2nd out of all the
counties of SC for chlamydia, 4th for gonorrhea, and 3rd for syphilis.
How can SCSU counteract the stats? A promiscuity test must be conducted. The
promiscuity test will be given only to the risky students. This test will save time while also
getting the message out to a substantial amount of students. It's a more personal approach as each
student will be tested individually. The method of gathering students around a presentation with
a pamphlet has been rendered useless. Students rarely pay attention to the speaker and usually
throw away the pamphlet. The test will force students to realize the possibility of contracting an
STD is highly likely.
The purpose of this test is to separate the more promiscuous students from the
conservative or less sexually active ones.
2. The purpose of this research is to design a test and then assess its reliability, validity and
norms.
