This document discusses library privacy laws and guidelines. It outlines that library records used to maintain materials can be withheld to protect user identity. The American Library Association's code of ethics protects each user's right to privacy of information sought and resources used. Some states allow parents access to records pertaining to their minor children, while 48 states have privacy laws, excluding Hawaii and Kentucky. Monitoring of electronic communications is also discussed.
