Sacagawea, a Shoshone woman, joined the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1805 as an interpreter to help them communicate with other Native American tribes they would encounter. The document, written in Lewis' handwriting, describes Sacagawea joining the expedition and devotes 8 to 10 sentences to discussing her name. As a primary source written during the expedition, it provides a first-hand account of Sacagawea's role.
