THE INTERNATIONAL
MIGRATION ANALYSIS
Ding Ma

Motivation and Factors to Focus on
 What is the fact of people from
one place move to another new
location?
 Communities detection based on
modularity and the partitioning
results. Does it comply with our
common sense?
 Geographical Locations
 Population of different countries
Questions
 What may cause human international
migration?
 Are the people in more denser areas
more likely to migrant to other areas
which are less denser?
 What are the trend of international
migrations?
 Are people more likely to migrant to
the area nearby or to migrant to the
area far away?
Data Description
United Nations Department
of Economic and Social
Affairs
 total migrant stock at mid-year by
origin and destination
 total number of immigration and
emigration of every major area,
region or country
 total population (thousands) over
the world in different stocks
For visualization
 Capitals of the countries or major
areas as the locations of every
migration stock.
 Merge through country codes which
are from ISO 311.
Map of International Migration
Community Detection Analysis
 Migration partitioning modularity is
0.552.
 The results are in accordance with
our common sense.
 You can still tell more stories based
on odd result.
Regression model for Migration
 coefficient of w1,w2 are 0.0856
and 0.0450 respectively.
 For the value of R2, it is only
0.027. Low R-squared values are
problematic when you need precise
predictions.
 There are so many factors
influencing people’s immigration
choise, so the environment noise is
considerably high.
Conclusions
 Around 86 people in every million of a
country tend to migrate to a certain
destination.
 The country with large population
attract more immigrants.
 The world is partitioned into different
regions based on network of
international migration.
Disadvantages and Further Topics:
 Immigration population for each
country is collected without knowing
specific cities. Thus, if we can get the
population number and location
information for each places for all
countries, the outcomes will be more
accurate and meaningful.
Thanks!
