2. A mystery
thriller genre
Our project targets a range of
different genres particularly
focusing on darkness and
mystery. We did this by applying
to other films in this genre and
used a stereotypical protagonist
who for us is a rich, powerful
boss man/gangsta who is trusted
and believed as he would have a
successful business cover up.
We also share themes and ideas that
have been successfully used in other
films e.g. A poker game that has been
successfully used in other films like
casino royal.
3. A film from a similar genre that
had an influence over our
themes...
Casino royal is one of the films that gave us lots of
influence for our project.
Like ours it uses the main plot/focus of the film
There is lots at stake in the poker
Binary opposition between characters
4. Similar
conventions
o This poker scene contains lots of long held shots
which capture the character's facial expressions
o This creates a slow pace which holds the tension
for longer
o Uses wide shots to capture the atmosphere and
setting
o Uses slow tracking shots
5. Also seen in
our project...
Long held focused shots on
poker players
Slow pace
Mysterious /dark non diegetic
background music
Bright lighting with dark
background
6. Another example ...
Enemy of the state – Will Smith playing ordinary lawyer
living normal lifestyle and gets tangled in corrupt
government business
Everyman hero
Compares to ordinary characters in our project who
come from normal lifestyles
Both containing protagonist corrupted villain
7. The maze runner
Shares a similar themes of being a game
Introduction of characters being taken as hostage
Being watched
Sense of confusion
Death as a consequence
8. What have we
challenged?
• Steven didn’t get enough
camera time
• Protagonist doesn’t fit
the stereotype
• Little evidence of death
(no blood)
10. Social groups and
issues that occur...
o Easy to tell issues are present from the first shot
o Binary opposition evident between hostages and
rich boss man and bodyguards
o Juxtaposition between hostages and clean setting
11. Camera
Close up shots
Wide shots
Focused shots
Mid shots
High angled shots
14. Mise en
scene
o Bright and dark lighting
contrast
o Costume design
o Neat and tidy table
contrasting with the dirty
hostages
o Also seen in squid game
15. Binary
opposition
A term defined by Strauss
Where signs are contrasted with
opposite meanings to make them
more powerful
This is seen in ours in 2 ways
One by being the clear opposition
between the hostages in the game
all desperately trying to win so they
can survive
Another way being the opposition
between the rich boss man and the
hostages (good and evil)
16. Stereotypes
All of the hostages represent typical
stereotypes of people you'll come across
in films.
For example Steven plays a regular
businessman who lives a very normal
life
This is similar to the character Will
Farrel plays in "Stranger than fiction"
We also see this with Susannah as she
plays the stereotype of a young, hard
working and independent
business woman like Pam from the
American office
