Me and my group created character profiles for our crime thriller film to allow the audience to get to know the characters better and understand their roles. We selected certain character types based on our research, including a drug dealer/user and a mysterious character seen briefly. Within the opening sequence, our character 'Kyle' is given the stereotype of a drug user to build up the story line, though he will die and only serve as a "donor" character. Our character 'T' is given the stereotype of a drug dealer through his calm mannerisms, having people do dirty work for him as a feared and powerful figure, demonstrating anger toward Kyle for owing money which leads to Kyle's

The costumes in the play "Wintertime" are designed to enhance the farcical and passionate elements of the story. In Act I, characters like Maria and Francois wear red hints in their costumes to indicate suppressed passion, while others like Frank contrast through formal attire. In Act II, after Maria's staged death, all characters mourn in black but wear red undergarments to represent embracing their passions openly. Costuming helps reveal characters' personalities and drives the plot complications through visually signaling emotions.

Narrative refers to the way a story is told and there are various theories created by theorists to explain different approaches to narrative. One well-known theory is Todorov's equilibrium and disequilibrium theory, which proposes that characters experience equilibrium until a problem causes disequilibrium, leading them to pursue a resolution and return to equilibrium. Narratives also have codes and conventions that depend on the genre, such as action-adventure movies conventionally featuring protagonists overcoming obstacles to achieve their goals, while social realism movies typically use real-world locations.
Short films are motion pictures that are 40 minutes or less in length. They were originally considered B movies that played before feature films in the 1920s. Independent studios and amateur filmmakers often create short films to gain recognition. Examples of short films include Pixar animated shorts that showcase new technology. Tips for a good short film include keeping it under 15 minutes, making it visual, finding single moments, telling a story, and engaging the audience. Typical conventions are low budgets, simple locations, relatable protagonists, twists, realistic stories and characters, minimal titles, and diverse camera work.
Rhys Smith plans to analyze a range of thriller films to understand conventions of the genre. They will be assessed on their ability to use appropriate film techniques like shots, sound, mise en scene, and framing. They are required to create titles and openings for a new 2-minute fiction film. The document discusses key thriller elements like protagonists, antagonists, genres (action, disaster), and character ethos. It explains that thrillers build suspense through narrative trajectory, bounded worlds, timescape, and how characters respond to threats.
