   Hubbard was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on
    November 25, 1903. As a student at
    Douglass School, Stowe School, and
    Walnut Hills High School.
   He was known as the fastest kid in
    school.
    He earned a four-year scholastic
    average of 90 (out of 100) in his high
    school years.
   He attended the University of Michigan
    where he competed in track and field
   In 1924 he participated in the Olympic games
    in Paris.
    He won the long jump at the 1924
    Olympics, becoming the first black athlete to
    win an Olympic gold medal in an individual
    event; set the long jump world record in 1925
    (25-103/4) and tied the 100-yard dash record
    (9.6) in 1926.

   He was the first African American to win an
    Olympic gold medal in an individual event.
