2. INTRODUCTION
Breastfeeding remains the healthier way of providing adequate infant
nutrition because breast milk promotes critical growth and
development which attribute to high child survival rate.
Where else Mothers and children are vulnerable groups, they need
special care especially the pregnant teenagers and those lactating as
major challenges in child nutrition care contributes to high
malnutrition among children under the age 2 years.
3. PROBLEM STATEMENT
Malnutrition in developing country remains a public health challenge accounting for approximately
30% of stunting in children (SOWC,2009),the majority cases occurring during the first two years of
life, a period considered a “critical window opportunity for prevention of under nutrition. Knowledge
deficit on exclusive breastfeeding, inadequate quality foods and poor care and weaning practices
have showed relation to malnutrition in children.
In Uganda UDHS, 2006, reported stunting at 38%, wasting at 6% and the underweight of 16% among
children of under 5 years with the high prevalence noted in the South West, West Nile, North and
Central which is Kampala registered the lowest rate of malnutrition
Kitgum being a district with borderline food consumption score with majority of the children under 5
years consuming only two meals a day in addition to low individual dietary score of 6-23 months.
Malnutrition of children under 5years was at 1.8% (MNCH Outcomes-world vision-Kitgum June 2011
-Dec,2016). This is the reason why malnutrition contributes to over half of the high infant mortality
rate of 76 deaths per 1000 live births. (DHO/ACF/UNICEF, 2011).
It’s also noted that with literacy rate of 43% and even much lower in females with only 22% in Kitgum
has continuously resulted in myths about infant breastfeeding such as consideration that ‘colostrum’
is unclean by some breastfeeding mothers. (IYCF/UNICEF,2009)
This document seeks to provide health opportunity for breastfeeding adolescent mothers to interact,
share breastfeeding challenges and discuss feasible solutions in addressing the identified
breastfeeding need.
