The Ottoman Empire ruled Istanbul for over 600 years until the establishment of the modern Republic of Turkey in 1923. Istanbul served as the capital of three successive empires and was known as Constantinople during the Byzantine and early Ottoman periods. Today Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey and a transcontinental metropolis located on both sides of the Bosphorus Strait.
