He ran for president in 1844 against Dallas and was considered a "dark horse candidate" but won. His wife Sarah was influential in his political career by helping him socialize. James Polk was born in 1795 in North Carolina to Samuel and Jane Polk. He was the oldest of 10 children. Both of his grandfathers fought in the Revolutionary War. Polk's family moved to Tennessee to become farmers. Polk had a stern upbringing where duty and hard work were emphasized. He became a well-educated lawyer and married Sarah Childress in 1824. Polk rose to political prominence, gaining the trust of Andrew Jackson. He was elected President in 1844 on the promise to acquire Texas, settle the Oregon boundary, and lower tariffs. Leo Yungfleisch was born on September 25, 1936 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He grew up in Pittsburgh and served in the US Navy. On October 17, 1959 he married Shirley Nadine Swingle in Columbus, Ohio where they lived in the Westgate area and were active in the St. Mary Magdalene parish. Leo Yungfleisch passed away on September 16, 2017 in Phoenix, Arizona and was buried at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona.

In 1955, she refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on a segregated bus in Montgomery, leading to her arrest and sparking the Montgomery Bus Boycott. She is known as the "Mother of the Civil Rights Movement" and her actions challenged racial segregation laws and helped launch the modern Civil Rights Movement.
