Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

2. Viking adalah suporter fanatik dari klub PERSIB BANDUNG
yang telah berdiri sejak 17 Juli 1993 tepatnya d jalan
Kancra no 34 sekitar daerah Buah Batu bandung.
Adapun pelopor pendiri Viking Persib Club adalah Heru
Joko, Ayi “Beutik”, Dodi “pesa” Rokhdian dan Hendra Bule.
Asal muasal didirikannya Viking karena dimulai dari
kecintaan sekelompok bobotoh yang menghuni tribun
selatan Stadion Persib (markas Persib pertama) untuk
mengikat kecintaan dan totalitasnya untuk mendukung
sang idola “pangeran biru”.
Nama Viking itu sendiri diambil dari nama suku di
Skandinavia yang berarti gigih, kokoh, pantang menyerah
dan berjiwa sang penakluk. Maka dari itu nama Viking
diadopsi agar makna tersebut bisa menular di kalangan
bobotoh khususnya bagi Persib Bandung sang “Pangeran
Biru”.
Sekarang anggota dari Viking itu sendiri sudah menginjak
100ribu lebih terdiri dari 50 distrik distrik Viking yang
tersebar di indonesia bahkan di luar negeri.
3. Periode1993-1998
Secara demonstratif, Viking Persib Club pertama kali mulai menunjukan
eksistensinya pada Liga Indonesia I — tahun 1993, yang digemborkan
sebagai kompetisi semi professional pertama di Tanah Air kita. Slogan
“PERSIB SANG PENAKLUK” begitu dominan terlihat pada salah satu
atribut yang dipakai anggotanya. Viking dimasa ini masihlah sangat
tradisional dan belum menunjukkan geliat sebagai sebuah organisasi
yang utuh secara profesional, bahkan pada awalnya mereka tidak
mempunyai homebase dan menjadikan halaman sekretariat PERSIB di
Jalan gurame sebagai tempat berkumpul. Seiring waktu kehadiran
mereka yang merajai tribun selatan pun mulai dikenal dan diakrabi
bobotoh, banyak pula yang berminat untuk menjadi bagian dari
Viking, pendaftaran anggota pun mulai dibuka lebar.
Pergerakan-pergerakan viking pun semakin terlihat ketika Persib
menjuarai liga Indonesia 1 yang ketika itu bernama Liga Dunhill walau
musim-musim seterusnya Persib “puasa” gelar.
4. Periode 1999-2004
Diperiode ini, Viking mengalami penambahan anggota yang cukup signifikan, bahkan
karena saking banyaknya anggota maka para pimpinan Viking pun merasa bahwa tribun
selatan sudah tak mampu lagi menampung jumlah anggota yang rutin menyaksikan
pertandingan PERSIB secara langsung di Siliwangi, akhirnya tribun timur pun menjadi
pilihan, terhitung sejak liga Indonesia VI, Viking mulai “hijrah” ke tribun timur dan
menunjukkan eksistensi serta dukungan dari tribun dengan “view” yang lebih nyaman dan
kapasatitas tempat duduk lebih besar.
Diperiode ini pulalah, tepatnya medio 2002-2003, Viking mengalami sebuah momentum
penting saat Yudi Baduy sang sekretaris umum mulai sibuk dengan rutinitas dan
pekerjaannya sehingga Viking membutuhkan darah segar untuk tetap menjaga dinamika
roda organisasi, dan masuklah Budhi Bram, keterlibatannya bersama Viking dimulai saat
yang bersangkutan menggarap album Kompilasi yang pertama. Seiring waktu, akhirnya
Budhi Bram resmi menjabat sebagai sekretaris umum Viking yang baru.
Pada masa ini pulalah Viking yang tetap di pimpin oleh dwitunggal Herru Joko sang ketua
umum dan Sang Panglima,Ayi Beutik mulai tumbuh sebagai organisasi yang sesungguhnya,
seluruh potensi organisasi pun terus dioptimalkan untuk mendatangkan manfaat bagi
PERSIB dan Viking sendiri. Viking dengan jumlah anggotanya yang mencapai ribuan orang
mulai dilirik oleh berbagai perusahaan dan menjalin beberapa kerjasama dalam event-
event besar. Tercatat berbagai perusahaan, mulai dari rokok, selular hingga clothing pernah
menjalin kerjasama dengan Viking Persib Club.
lama kelamaan aksi Viking tak hanya sekedar bersorak di stadion, namun aktivitasnya
mulai menyentuh berbagai aspek kehidupan, seperti bakti sosial, sunatan masal,
kompetisi-kompetisi kreatif dll. Dimasa ini pulalah Viking mulai menjalin simpul-simpul
signifikan dengan pihak-pihak yang strategis, seperti walikota Bandung dll.
5. Periode 2005-2009
Dimasa ini Viking semakin mapan dan dewasa, bahkan sisi
komersil pun mulai teroptimalkan secara elegan. Lihat saja
kelahiran Viking Persib fanshop yang bergerak dibisnis
properti supporter, ataupun album digital dan bisnis RBT
serta website resmi www.vikingpersib-club.com yang
digarap oleh Viking, semakin menunjukkan ke-profesionalan
organisasi ini. Jangan lupakan pula kehadiran PERSIB magz
yang fenomenal dan sempat mewarnai dunia media
soporter ditanah air dan berganti nama menjadi majalah
Persib.
6. Idealisme Viking Persib Club
Viking Persib Club adalah sebuah kelompok bukanlah organisasi atau fans
club dengan segala aturan-aturan formal yang mengikatnya. Setiap
anggota atau Vikers adalah bagian dari sebuah “Keluarga”, …. Dan
layaknya sebuah Keluarga, keberagaman sifat dan tingkah laku yang
berada didalamnya adalah merupakan sesuatu hal yang lumrah, dan
Viking akan selalu berusaha untuk mengakomodir keberagaman
tersebut.
Kelompok Suporter dapat dikatakan sebagai kelompok sosial, karena
didalamnya terdapat sekumpulan individu yang berinteraksi secara
bersama-sama serta memiliki kesadaran keanggotaan yang didasarkan
oleh kehendak dan prilaku yang disepakati. Seperti kebanyakan
kelompok-kelompok Bobotoh lainnya yang turut terlahir sama seperti
halnya Viking Persib Club, yaitu secara Grass Root (dari arus
bawah), maka Viking Persib Club memiliki cara atau cirri khas dalam
menyikapi setiap permasalahan anggotanya. Hubungan pertemanan dan
kekeluargaan yang tulus, erat tanpa pamrih serta rasa persaudaraan
yang tinggi menjadi modal yang kuat bagi VIKING untuk terus eksis
selama beberapa dekade.
7. Kepemimpinan & Kepengurusan Viking Persib Club
Sejak awal berdirinya hingga saat ini, Viking Persib Club diketuai oleh Heru Joko,
dengan Panglima — Ayi Beutik. Pertanyaan yang muncul,Mengapa harus ada
figur panglima? Jawabannya karena Bobotoh terikat secara emosional, dan
mereka mengikatkan diri kepada PERSIB dan juga kepada sesama pendukung
Persib. Kata Panglima disini adalah sosok “Ibu” dalam keluarga, pengasuh bagi
anak-anaknya, sosok yang memimpin serta melindungi para anggota apabila
terjadi sesuatu dilapangan. Sedangkan jabatan Ketua Umum yang disandang
Heru Joko, adalah sebagai figure kharismatik yang memiliki fungsi politis keluar
organisasi atau kelompok lain. Lain halnya dengan Yoedi Baduy yang menjabat
sebagai Sekretaris Umum, ia mengelola dan mengkoordinir segala bentuk
kegiatan secara administratif. Bisa dikatakan ketiganya adalah pemimpin atau
leader Viking Persib Club, yang tentu saja ditopang oleh pentolan-pentolan
Viking Persib Club yang lainnya, seperti ; Yana Ewok, Asep “Ucok”, Yana Bool (Mr.
Y), Dadan Gareng, Boseng, Odoy, Pesa dan Hendra Bule.
Dan yang tak kalah pentingnya lagi, kontribusi Distrik-distrik Viking Persib Club yang
saat ini sudah tersebar diberbagai wilayah , seolah menjadi elemen penting
lainnya bagi pendobrak berkembangnya Viking Persib Club dewasa ini.
8. Viking and the others supporter
Sama hal nya dengan Persib yang mempunyai kelompok supporter Viking klub-
klub lain di Indonesia pun mempunyai supporter fanatik diantaranya
Persebaya dengan Boneknya lalu Arema dengan Aremanianya dan tentu saja
supporter yang selalu bentrok dengan Viking yaitu Jakmania.
Gesekan demi gesekan yang terjadi di kalangan suporter di Indonesia karena
mereka menyalah artikan apa itu yang dinamakannya sebuah “totalitas”.
Mungkin bagi sebagian orang apapun akan dilakukannya apabila ada yang
mengejek atau melecehkan klub atau organisasi suporternya.
Tapi bukan hanya fenomena bentrok saja yang ada di dunia suporter di
Indonesia bahkan “koalisi”pun dilakukan beberapa klub supoerter sereti
koalisi Viking, Bonek dan Pasoepati (suporter Persis Solo) atau di kubu yang
berlawanan ada Aremania dan Jakmania.
Koalisi atau arogansi tiap klub suporter itu bagus bahkan perlu, tapi apa itu
menuju perubahan yang lebih bagus bagi dunia sepakbola di negeri ini atau
hanya akan menambah carut marutnya ?
Yang jelas semuanya tidak akan menjadi lebih baik bila kita tidak memulai
perubahan dan perbaikan itu dari mulai hal yang terkecil, dari lingkungan
terkecil dan yang jelas perbaikan itu harus dimulai dari diri kita sendiri.
