The individual mandate under the Affordable Care Act requires individuals to have minimum essential health coverage or pay a shared responsibility payment based on income. Specified disease and accident plans are exempt from ACA mandates and are not considered minimum essential coverage. If an individual does not receive an exemption or have minimum essential coverage for 9 months of the year, including through an employer plan, grandfathered plan, or ACA plan, they will owe the shared responsibility payment even if covered by a PremierChoice plan.
