Gamification for participation STC NY MetroJLSagan
Pacesetter Presentation for the Leadership Program at the STC Summit 2015. Topic covered: Gamification for Participation. NOTE: I am not the author of this presentation; I am just posting it via my account.
Designing to save lives: Government technical documentation Laurian Vega
In this presentation the speakers will discuss the methods and strategies of writing technical communication in the design of software for the government sector with the broader goal of evaluating best practices for how to create a positive user experience for a particular user group. Creating software for the government, and specifically in defense contracting, involves understanding a specific set of user needs and a variety of command and control net-centric contexts ranging from real-time analytics, cyber-situational awareness, to strategic and operational planning. The best practices for designing and writing for such a diverse set of needs involves tight integration with the software development team, stakeholders, and users such that the right words and elements are incorporated into the interface and that the technical documentation properly reflects the software’s features. The presenters will further discuss examples of content strategy driving from their industry experience and expertise.
With increasing levels of abstraction in frameworks, it is rare that web developers interact directly with databases. However, ORMs can slow seemingly simple queries down to a crawl. Instead of trying to maintain complex cache keys with the latest fashionable key-value store, let's revisit this 30 year old technology.
As a result of the advent of internet technologies supporting participation on the internet via blogs, wikis and other social networking approaches, chemists now have an opportunity to contribute to the growing chemistry content on the web. As scientists an important skill to develop is the ability to succinctly report in a published format the details of scientific experimentation. The Royal Society of Chemistry provides a number of online systems to share chemistry data, the most well known of these being the ChemSpider database. In parallel the ChemSpider SyntheticPages (CSSP) platform is an online publishing platform for scientists, and especially students, to publish the details of chemical syntheses that they have performed. Using the rich capabilities of internet platforms, including the ability to display interactive spectral data and movies, CSSP is an ideal environment for students to publish their work, especially syntheses that might not support mainstream publication.

The problem with passwords on the web and what to do about itFrancois Marier
Handling user passwords safely is hard, but replacing passwords on the web in a reasonable way is even harder. Really, this should have been in the browser all along. This is where Persona comes in.
Scrummaster Needed Desperately at 2016 Scrum AustraliaBernd Schiffer
There is a lot of reluctance within organisations to place ScrumMasters, let alone to spend money to hire them. Surely this role can be done by one of the developers, right? After all, it’s only a minor role, isn’t it? Far from it! The ScrumMaster is a full-time role. Without it, who can take care of the agile process on behalf of a busy Scrum team?
One way to help teams and management understand the value of the ScrumMaster’s role is to show them the volume and importance of tasks a ScrumMaster can fulfil, and the consequences of what happens if nobody takes care of these tasks. This session not only presents the 42 tasks of a ScrumMaster’s role but will clearly show that every Scrum team needs a ScrumMaster.

GitHub is that awesome thing everyone says you’ve gotta use, but how many of us can make heads or tails of it? If you’re tired of pretending to understand when someone talks about “merging the latest pull request” or want to know what the heck forks have to do with code, this rundown’s for you.
I’ll show you how a little dose of science fiction is the key to understanding Version Control. There will be teleportation, time travel, there may even be a victimless murder as you learn the difference between a Fetch and a Pull, why Rebasing changes history, and how merging branches can magically reconcile conflicting code.
Whether you develop, design, or just care about content, Git, GitHub, and Version Control can be some of the most useful tools in your kit. After this primer, you’ll see why Git and GitHub is for everyone, including you.

The increased use of OpenStreetMap in commercial products creates many opportunities and challenges for the OSM community and its commercial users. While the creation of spatial data remains the domain of a few experts, the continued growth of mobile applications results in the creation of massive geodata by consumers from which the OSM project can certainly benefit. In parallel, commercial users will need to feel less constrained to protect their geodata allowing them to shift their focus on developing greater competitive solutions for their customers. This session will explore possible collaboration models between commercial users of OSM and the broader community, and offer insights into reaching greater participation in the OSM project.
Throttle and Debounce Patterns in Web AppsAlmir Filho
A brief discussion on the Throttle and Debounce Patterns. Where, when and why to use them? They solve some problems that may harm the performance of an entire web app due to misuse of user events.
Combining Context with Signals in the IoT (longer version)Andy Piper
The Internet of Things is about signals; the amazing information shared on Twitter can provide context. Find out how projects use Twitter as a great place to connect their IoT data with the real world.

As educational developers and trainers the focus of our work is on supporting others to learn and develop new skills. We do this in a variety of different ways from face to face to blended and distance learning. Increasingly technology is providing innovative ways to enhance teaching and learning and to engage learners. This may include the use of video, audio and images as well as Web 2.0 tools and social media. The potential to socially share this knowledge and to use technology to mediate this process is an important aspect of our own professional development. Shining a spotlight on how we can use social media to do this, I will share some of the key tools I have used and the impact they have had.

Wireframing, Mockups, and Prototyping Made EasyJohn Collins
Your job description might not say anything at all about making wireframes, interactive mockups, or prototypes, but having the ability to quickly create them can be invaluable, whether you're the de facto user experience team at your company, or a content strategist, or a technical writer. There's a wealth of new tools that make prototyping easier than ever—you don't have to be a Photoshop guru or know any software code! Pick up some new skills that can help you solve difficult concepts, communicate more efficiently, drive improvements to your products, or move your career in a new direction.
