Adolescents and young people have repeatedly proven that they can provide innovative solutions in the midst of complex humanitarian crises. Soon after the December 2004 tsunami they mobilized, helping to distribute aid, assisting with clean-up and rebuilding, and caring for those younger than themselves. Yet their enthusiasm, creativity and energy is not being fully utilized in rehabilitation and development efforts. This publication highlights the helpful, analytical and compassionate comments they made on UNICEF's Voices of Youth website, and firmly states that "it is time to listen" to these young people and to engage them as key partners.

E-government—digital interactions between governments and people—varies greatly among and within regions, but most countries are making progress on providing greater access, according to the 2014 UN E-Government Survey launched today. The findings show that the Republic of Korea tops the global e-government ranking, and that Europe remains first among regions.
The report also shows that many countries are expanding electronic participation, utilizing more mobile and social media tools, expanding usage and making more government data available online. However, challenges remain, such as lack of resources, digital inequalities and a lack of leadership for e-government.
“E-government holds tremendous potential to improve the way that governments deliver public services and enhance broad stakeholder involvement in public service,” said Wu Hongbo, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs and Secretary-General for the International Conference on Small Island Developing States.

11. UN SUMMIT TO ADOPT POST-2015 DEVELOPMENT
AGENDA convened as a high-level plenary meeting of
the General Assembly.
UNITED NATIONS YOUTH ASSOCIATIONS NETWORK (UNYANET)- Amanda Yeo, Blog editor - www.unyanet.org 11
• More than 150 world leaders are expected to attend the UN Sustainable
Development Summit to formally adopt an ambitious new sustainable
development agenda.
• This momentous agenda will serve as the launch pad for action by the
international community and by national governments to promote shared
prosperity and well-being for all over the next 15 years.
On September 25th 2015, 193 world leaders will commit to 17 goals to
achieve 3 extraordinary things in the next 15 years. End extreme poverty. Fight
inequality & injustice. Fix climate change. The Global Goals for sustainable
development could get these things done. In all countries. For all people.
12. Why are new goals being adopted this year?
UNITED NATIONS YOUTH ASSOCIATIONS NETWORK (UNYANET)- Amanda Yeo, Blog editor - www.unyanet.org 12
The Millennium Development Goals that were launched in 2000 set 2015 as
the target year. Recognizing the success of the Goals – and the fact that a new
development agenda was needed beyond 2015 – countries agreed in 2012 at
Rio+20, the UN Conference on Sustainable Development, to establish an open
working group to develop a set of sustainable development goals.
After more than a year of negotiations, the Open Working Group presented its
recommendation for the 17 sustainable development goals. In early August
2015, the 193 member states of the United Nations reached consensus on the
outcome document of the new agenda “Transforming our World: The 2030
Agenda for Sustainable Development”.
13. Why are there so many goals?
UNITED NATIONS YOUTH ASSOCIATIONS NETWORK (UNYANET)- Amanda Yeo, Blog editor - www.unyanet.org 13
There are 17 sustainable development goals with 169 targets in contrast to the 8
Millennium Development Goals with 21 targets. The complex challenges that exist
in the world today demand that a wide range of issues is covered. It is, also,
critical to address the root causes of the problems and not only of the symptoms.
The sustainable development goals are the result of a negotiation process that
involved the 193 UN member states and also unprecedented participation of civil
society and other stakeholders. This led to the representation of a wide range of
interests and perspectives. On the other hand, the MDGs were produced by a
group of experts behind closed doors.
The goals are broad in scope because they will address the interconnected
elements of sustainable development: economic growth, social inclusion and
environmental protection. The MDGs focused primarily on the social agenda.
The MDGs targeted developing countries, particularly the poorest while the
sustainable development goals will apply to the entire world, the rich and the
poor.
14. How to implement better?
-with support of youth involvement
UNITED NATIONS YOUTH ASSOCIATIONS NETWORK (UNYANET)- Amanda Yeo, Blog editor - www.unyanet.org 14
1. Participation- making the world a better place requires people’s
engagement

“It was my first experience to be given a chance to debate
the development priorities, and based on the documents
on the voices of young people to be included.
After listening to it and the participation, I thought, young
people can change the world if they are given a chance.
We have to fight for that chance.”
