The road not taken
By- Robert Frost
Moral of the poem
The poem, “The Road Not Taken” by
Robert Frost states that in life we
come upon many decisions, and there
are points where we have to let fate
take the lead. In this poem we come
to realize that life is a combination of
decisions and fate. The two paths
symbolize the life of the traveler and
all his life decisions.
Through this poem, the poet tries to
tell his readers that no matter which
way/path you choose, you will always
wonder ''what would have happened if
I had chosen the other path?"
Therefore, the path that you choose
will no doubt make a difference in your
life.
This lesson is an effort to understand Indian classical
musicians and instruments especially the origin of shehnai
and Shehnai maestro Ustad Bismillah Khan. Shehnai
replaced pungi which had an unpleasant sound. Pungi’s
tonal quality was improved by a nai (barbar) of sah
(emperor Aurnangeb); hence it was named as shehnai. The
lesson beautifully deals with the early life of Bismillah khan
in Dumraon in Bihar. His grandfather was a shehnai-nawaz
of the bhojpur king’s court. Bismillah khan took to music
early in life when he was 3 years old in the company of his
maternal uncle. His life is a source of simplicity and
communal harmony from the very beginning when he used
to sing ‘ Chiata’ in Bihariji temple and practicing shehnai in
Vishnu temple and Mangala Maiya temple of Varanasi.
Bismillah khan got his big break with the opening of All
India Radio in Lucknow in 1938. He also played shehnai on
15 August, 1947 from Red fort in presence of Pandit Nehru.
Bismillah khan gave many memorable
performances both in India and abroad where he
was honoured with so many awards. He also gave
music in two movies ‘Gunj Uthi shehnai’ and
‘Sanadhi Apanna”. He was so fond of his
motherland India, Benaras and the holy Ganga
that he refused an offer to be the Head of Shehnai
school in USA. In 2001, Ustad Bismillah khan
was awarded India’s highest civilian avard, the
Bharat Ratna. In the end, his life is a perfect
example of the rich, cultural heritage of India, one
that effortlessly accepts that a devout Muslim like
him can very naturally play the shehnai at the
Kashi Vishwanath Temple.
What we have learnt from
Ustad Bismillah Khan
The poem Wind by Subramania Bharati
is originally in Tamil. It was
translated in English by A. K.
Ramanujan.The poem describes the
power of the wind on nature and
human life. It focuses on the violent
aspect of the wind that causes heavy
destruction. The poet tells us that the
wind makes fun of the weak people
and things, but favors the strong. He,
therefore, suggests the reader be strong,
both physically and mentally.The wind
here is the symbol of hardships and
obstacles which human beings have to
face in their life. If we remain strong,
we can overcome any obstacles.
Summary
The poet requests the wind to blow gently. He
asks the wind not to break the shutters of the
windows, scatter the papers and throw down
the books from the shelf. But the wind does
not listen to him and turns violent and
destructive. It throws down everything and
tears the pages of the books. The poet
accuses the wind of bringing rain once
again. He tells the wind that it always makes
fun of weak people and things. It crumbles
down weak houses, weak doors, and weak
rafters. It tears down weak bodies and
fragile hearts. But does no harm to the
strong.
The poet says that it is up to the wind god whether it
brings destruction or shows mercy on humanity. The
poet suggests the reader that to make friends with the
wind we need to build strong homes with firm doors. He
also suggests people be strong, both physically and
mentally to combat and resist the ill effects of the wind.
The last four lines of the poem tell us about the nature
of the wind.
It blows out those fires which burn with a weak force,
but the strong fires turn stronger by the wind. It means
that the wind is supportive of those who are already
strong and powerful but crushes the weak. A very
significant message is hidden in these four lines-strong
people are not affected by adversities but the weak do.
So, it is good to be a friend of the wind, which is a
symbol of hardships and obstacles, because only then
we will be able to face tough times.

The lost child
By- Mulk Raj Anand
The Lost Child is the
story of a small child
who gets lost in a fair.
He had gone with his
parents to the fair but
loses them when he gets
engrossed in looking at a
roundabout swing. The
story highlights the bond
of love and affection
that the child shares
with his parents
When he was with his parents,
the little boy was attracted by
many things in the fair like
sweets, balloons, snake
charmer, garland of flowers ,
but his parents refused him
from buying all those things.
But when he was attracted by
the roundabout he ask from his
parents to just take a ride on it
but when he realises that there
was no reply from his parent
side he found himself lost in
the fair.
