Kathryn Maloney is a prospective industrial designer and structural engineer interested in creating food storage solutions for urban dwellers living in shared spaces. She has created a hinged container prototype with a smart sensor and linked iPhone app to map food expiration dates and prevent spoilage. Maloney is also inspired by taking everyday materials and putting them in new contexts, such as a piece made of magazine and tissue paper. She studied art conservation and saw how different materials can have both positive and negative effects when combined, like a true union of science and art.
