In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.
Welcome to the new Mizzima Weekly !
Mizzima Media Group is pleased to announce the relaunch of Mizzima Weekly. Mizzima is dedicated to helping our readers and viewers keep up to date on the latest developments in Myanmar and related to Myanmar by offering analysis and insight into the subjects that matter. Our websites and our social media channels provide readers and viewers with up-to-the-minute and up-to-date news, which we don’t necessarily need to replicate in our Mizzima Weekly magazine. But where we see a gap is in providing more analysis, insight and in-depth coverage of Myanmar, that is of particular interest to a range of readers.

By S. SHIVPPRASADH
Chennapatnam can ill
afford to miss without
singing praise of one
of her illustrious sons
“NATAKA KAVALAR R.S.
Manohar”. Although
native of Puvanur –
Thiruvarur district and
born on 29.06.1925 at
Namakkal he settled
down at Madras T.
Nagar in 1930 he
did his full schooling
only at Prestigious
Ramakrishna Mission
School Chennai,
T. Nagar. (General
Sundarji was his
classmate) During
his school days he
had taken part in
Shakespearian, Tamil
and Sanskrit Dramas.
He was university
officers’ Corps (U.O.T.C)
Indian Air Trg Corps
(I.A.T.C) cadet. He
started acting in Tamil
Films since 1950 and
visited Red China in
1957 as one of the
cultural delegates of
Chennapatnam to
take part in Asian
Film Festival held in
Beijing. He founded
and nurtured his
Chennai based Drama
Troupe “National
Theatres” in 1954.
RSM received titles
like “LANKESWARAN”,
NATAKA KAVALAR
from MGR, NATAKA
CHEMMAL from Dr.
Selvi J. Jayalalithaa,
NATAKA PADMAM,
NATAKA RATNA,
NATAKA KALA
NIPUNA, GNANA
KALA BHARATHI,
P A R A M A C H A R I A R
VIRUDHU, M.A.
C H I D A M B A R A M
CHETTIAR AWARD,
M U T H A M I Z H
P E R A R I G N A R ,
ISAI PERARIGNAR,
SANGEETH NATAK
AKADEMY, NATAKA
PEROLI, etc, and when
he was hospitalized
during his last days in
2006 this writer received
on RSM’s behalf “Award
for his outstanding
contribution in the
field of Stage Dramas”
from Thambraas. RSM
had served as Member
Secretary of Tamil
Nadu Eyal Isai Nataka
Mandram from 1991 to
1995.
Most of Chennai Drama
Stage Auditoriums had
been designed by R.S.
Manohar as per his
Drama Requirements
and Specifications to
suit his Drama Scope
Scene Settings. If
anyone by chance visits
Naradha Gana Sabha
Stage etc. they would
find the following words
duly permanently
engraved on stage
“This stage has been
designed by Nataka
Kavalar Thiru. R.S.
Manohar” or if any
one goes to Bharath
Kalachar Auditorium
etc RSM Portrait would
be cordially welcoming
them to stage from the
Green room.
R.S. Manohar had
earlier three miraculous
escapes from the jaws of
death. This writer had
been just 6 years old
living in a joint family
system in 1967 who
witnessed the wailing of
my relatives after a lion
made an unsuccessful
attempt to attack my
uncle Mr.R.S.Manohar
during the film shooting
of M.M.A. Sandow
Chinnappa Devar’s Film
“Ner Vazhi” at Chennai.
Although the scar of
lion’s claws’ impression
on my uncle’s shoulder
had erased over a
period of time but his
narration of harrowing
experience still linger
in my mind as he was
left by the trainers to
defend all by himself
due to the sudden
unusual behaviour
of the trained lion. In
Manohar’s words “My
Villanish roaring voice
had frightened even the
lion itself to leave me
alive”.
Similarly in 1984
while in action on
stage for the drama
trick scene sequence
“ N a r a g a s u r a n ”
seated on a Trolly
R . S . M a n o h a r ’ s
instructions “IRU DAA”
meaning “to wait”
falsely heard by his
technician as “IZHU
DAA” meaning “to pull”,
led to R.S.Manohar’s
fall from 20 feet height
on back stage. In-spite
of his bad fall he had
completed the balance
15 minutes of the
drama bearing with
his uncontrollable pain
on a Sunday morning
show at sir Raja
Annamalai Mandram.
If only a bigger crack
had developed little
higher on his neck
he would have been
rendered permanently
paralysed for the rest
of his life.
In 1979 R.S.Manohar
and his troupe had
a miraculous escape
when a semi permanent
stage roof totally
collapsed due to heavy
rain just before the start
of their play.
Excerpts from speech
ADDRESSD BY
HIS EXCELLENCY
D R . K . R O S A I A H ,
GOVERNOR OF TAMIL
NADU AT THE 91ST
BIRTH ANNIVERSARY
CELEBRATIONS OF
LATE R.S.MANOHAR
AT INFOSYS HALL,
T.NAGAR, CHENNAI ON
28.06.2015 AT 06.30
PM. “R.S. Manohar
had earned a renowned
name in the field of
Theater Art. He started
with social plays which
set his foot in stage
Dramas. It earned him
a special name. His
devotion and dedication,
determination to give
his best and bring
out the best out of his
accompanying artists
brought pride to Tamil
Nadu Theater arts. It
would be interesting to
note that R.S.Manohar
has given more than
7,900 shows and 31
of his memorable
productions were
on Mythological and
Historical Themes.
His shows projected
our rich and glorious
heritage, demonstrated
the complexity of
human nature and
above all brought
the historic past, the
renowned epics of Tamil
and their glory to the
younger generation. He
was a pillar of the Tamil
Theater and introduced
new ideas and concepts
in stage performance.
He was the first to
introduce Drama scope
with stereophonic sound
system. The passing
away of R.S.Manohar
has left a void in Tamil
Theater and stage field”
