Chennapatnam can ill
afford to miss without
singing praise of one
of her illustrious sons
“NATAKA KAVALAR R.S.
Manohar”. Although
native of Puvanur –
Thiruvarur district and
born on 29.06.1925 at
Namakkal he settled
down at Madras T.
Nagar in 1930 he
did his full schooling
only at Prestigious
Ramakrishna Mission
School Chennai,
T. Nagar. (General
Sundarji was his
classmate) During
his school days he
had taken part in
Shakespearian, Tamil
and Sanskrit Dramas.
He was university
officers’ Corps (U.O.T.C)
 Indian Air Trg Corps
(I.A.T.C) cadet. He
started acting in Tamil
Films since 1950 and
visited Red China in
1957 as one of the
cultural delegates of
Chennapatnam to
take part in Asian
Film Festival held in
Beijing. He founded
and nurtured his
Chennai based Drama
Troupe “National
Theatres” in 1954.
RSM received titles
like “LANKESWARAN”,
NATAKA KAVALAR
from MGR, NATAKA
CHEMMAL from Dr.
Selvi J. Jayalalithaa,
NATAKA PADMAM,
NATAKA RATNA,
NATAKA KALA
NIPUNA, GNANA
KALA BHARATHI,
P A R A M A C H A R I A R
VIRUDHU, M.A.
C H I D A M B A R A M
CHETTIAR AWARD,
M U T H A M I Z H
P E R A R I G N A R ,
ISAI PERARIGNAR,
SANGEETH NATAK
AKADEMY, NATAKA
PEROLI, etc, and when
he was hospitalized
during his last days in
2006 this writer received
on RSM’s behalf “Award
for his outstanding
contribution in the
field of Stage Dramas”
from Thambraas. RSM
had served as Member
Secretary of Tamil
Nadu Eyal Isai Nataka
Mandram from 1991 to
1995.
Most of Chennai Drama
Stage Auditoriums had
been designed by R.S.
Manohar as per his
Drama Requirements
and Specifications to
suit his Drama Scope
Scene Settings. If
anyone by chance visits
Naradha Gana Sabha
Stage etc. they would
find the following words
duly permanently
engraved on stage
“This stage has been
designed by Nataka
Kavalar Thiru. R.S.
Manohar” or if any
one goes to Bharath
Kalachar Auditorium
etc RSM Portrait would
be cordially welcoming
them to stage from the
Green room.
R.S. Manohar had
earlier three miraculous
escapes from the jaws of
death. This writer had
been just 6 years old
living in a joint family
system in 1967 who
witnessed the wailing of
my relatives after a lion
made an unsuccessful
attempt to attack my
uncle Mr.R.S.Manohar
during the film shooting
of M.M.A. Sandow
Chinnappa Devar’s Film
“Ner Vazhi” at Chennai.
Although the scar of
lion’s claws’ impression
on my uncle’s shoulder
had erased over a
period of time but his
narration of harrowing
experience still linger
in my mind as he was
left by the trainers to
defend all by himself
due to the sudden
unusual behaviour
of the trained lion. In
Manohar’s words “My
Villanish roaring voice
had frightened even the
lion itself to leave me
alive”.
Similarly in 1984
while in action on
stage for the drama
trick scene sequence
“ N a r a g a s u r a n ”
seated on a Trolly
R . S . M a n o h a r ’ s
instructions “IRU DAA”
meaning “to wait”
falsely heard by his
technician as “IZHU
DAA” meaning “to pull”,
led to R.S.Manohar’s
fall from 20 feet height
on back stage. In-spite
of his bad fall he had
completed the balance
15 minutes of the
drama bearing with
his uncontrollable pain
on a Sunday morning
show at sir Raja
Annamalai Mandram.
If only a bigger crack
had developed little
higher on his neck
he would have been
rendered permanently
paralysed for the rest
of his life.
In 1979 R.S.Manohar
and his troupe had
a miraculous escape
when a semi permanent
stage roof totally
collapsed due to heavy
rain just before the start
of their play.
Excerpts from speech
ADDRESSD BY
HIS EXCELLENCY
D R . K . R O S A I A H ,
GOVERNOR OF TAMIL
NADU AT THE 91ST
BIRTH ANNIVERSARY
CELEBRATIONS OF
LATE R.S.MANOHAR
AT INFOSYS HALL,
T.NAGAR, CHENNAI ON
28.06.2015 AT 06.30
PM. “R.S. Manohar
had earned a renowned
name in the field of
Theater Art. He started
with social plays which
set his foot in stage
Dramas. It earned him
a special name. His
devotion and dedication,
determination to give
his best and bring
out the best out of his
accompanying artists
brought pride to Tamil
Nadu Theater arts. It
would be interesting to
note that R.S.Manohar
has given more than
7,900 shows and 31
of his memorable
productions were
on Mythological and
Historical Themes.
His shows projected
our rich and glorious
heritage, demonstrated
the complexity of
human nature and
above all brought
the historic past, the
renowned epics of Tamil
and their glory to the
younger generation. He
was a pillar of the Tamil
Theater and introduced
new ideas and concepts
in stage performance.
He was the first to
introduce Drama scope
with stereophonic sound
system. The passing
away of R.S.Manohar
has left a void in Tamil
Theater and stage field”

ISKCON Celebrates Golden Jubilee
The Annual JagannathRathYatra will be held
on 14th January, 2016 (Thursday) under the
auspices of International Society for Krishna
Consciousness (ISKCON), Chennai Chapter.
ISKCON, founded by His divine grace A. C.
Bhakthivedanta Swami Prabhupada in 1966
is also celebrating its Golden Jubilee.
The RathYatra will start from Kapaleeswarar
Temple, Mylaporebetween 2:30 and
3:30 pm. and will reach the venue at
ChetpetKuchalambalKalyanaMandapam.
The procession will go through R.K
Mutt Road, Royapettah High Road,
Dr.RadhakrishnanSalai, Cathedral Road, N.H.
Road and Village Road.
During the procession, ISKCON will distribute
about 10,000 plates of prasadam to the general
public. Everyone is invited to join and pull the
Rath, which is by far the biggest RathYatra in
Chennai. Many school children across the city
will participate in the Yatra.
According to Mr. Das, of ISKCON “This is
the biggest RathYatra in Chennai. We have
been doing this annual ritual since 1983.
We take pride in bringing this wonderful
and colourful parade which gives an
opportunity for people to come together and
pay their respects to the Lord Jagannath.
Onlookers are taken by surprise to see Lord
Jagannath on a colourful cart, pouring out
his mercy. People excitedly wait for the
Prasadam (sweets) thrown from the Rath.
Swami SrilaPrabhupada inaugurated the
first RathaYatra outside India on 27th July
in the year of 1967 at San Francisco. The
history of Sri JagannathRathyatra festival
in Chennai dates back to 1983. The opulent
and grand chariot was built by a Canadian
devotee, HG Rasananda Das with substantial
contribution from Mr. Krishan Myer of
Automac, Ambattur. Mr. Ramesh Prasad,
Managing Director of Prasad Studios has
given space within to park and protect the

SPACE. This kind
of workshop is to
provide hands-on
science experiment in
Astronomy and Space
Science as a part of the
conference theme; this
will ignite the spark
of Imagination and
Curiosity. Hands-on
learning changes the
student’s perception of
science from a ‘burden’
to a ‘discovery’. Students
enjoy challenges that
are fun and work
towards a better future.
The workshop was
inaugurated by Dr.
Alagiriswamy, Asst. Prof
SRM University Dept.
of Physics and Nano
Technology. He was
motivating the students
in his inaugural address
“This will attract a rare
mix of students from
across the schools and
those to whom these
issues are relatively
new. I ensure, there’s
something for everyone.
I am sure that this
side-line event will be
a memorable, highly
educational and ‘not-
to-be-missed’ event”.
He joined with audience

were presented to the
students. Through
this workshop students
learnt about how to
safely observe the Sun.
Students learnt how
Sun looks different
when viewed though
a solar filter, about
different solar features.
Students realized the
importance of using
safe methods for solar
observation. During
the field observation
students had hands-

  • 4. PILLAR TIMES4 January 10 - January 16, 2016 By S. SHIVPPRASADH Chennapatnam can ill afford to miss without singing praise of one of her illustrious sons “NATAKA KAVALAR R.S. Manohar”. Although native of Puvanur – Thiruvarur district and born on 29.06.1925 at Namakkal he settled down at Madras T. Nagar in 1930 he did his full schooling only at Prestigious Ramakrishna Mission School Chennai, T. Nagar. (General Sundarji was his classmate) During his school days he had taken part in Shakespearian, Tamil and Sanskrit Dramas. He was university officers’ Corps (U.O.T.C) Indian Air Trg Corps (I.A.T.C) cadet. He started acting in Tamil Films since 1950 and visited Red China in 1957 as one of the cultural delegates of Chennapatnam to take part in Asian Film Festival held in Beijing. He founded and nurtured his Chennai based Drama Troupe “National Theatres” in 1954. RSM received titles like “LANKESWARAN”, NATAKA KAVALAR from MGR, NATAKA CHEMMAL from Dr. Selvi J. Jayalalithaa, NATAKA PADMAM, NATAKA RATNA, NATAKA KALA NIPUNA, GNANA KALA BHARATHI, P A R A M A C H A R I A R VIRUDHU, M.A. C H I D A M B A R A M CHETTIAR AWARD, M U T H A M I Z H P E R A R I G N A R , ISAI PERARIGNAR, SANGEETH NATAK AKADEMY, NATAKA PEROLI, etc, and when he was hospitalized during his last days in 2006 this writer received on RSM’s behalf “Award for his outstanding contribution in the field of Stage Dramas” from Thambraas. RSM had served as Member Secretary of Tamil Nadu Eyal Isai Nataka Mandram from 1991 to 1995. Most of Chennai Drama Stage Auditoriums had been designed by R.S. Manohar as per his Drama Requirements and Specifications to suit his Drama Scope Scene Settings. If anyone by chance visits Naradha Gana Sabha Stage etc. they would find the following words duly permanently engraved on stage “This stage has been designed by Nataka Kavalar Thiru. R.S. Manohar” or if any one goes to Bharath Kalachar Auditorium etc RSM Portrait would be cordially welcoming them to stage from the Green room. R.S. Manohar had earlier three miraculous escapes from the jaws of death. This writer had been just 6 years old living in a joint family system in 1967 who witnessed the wailing of my relatives after a lion made an unsuccessful attempt to attack my uncle Mr.R.S.Manohar during the film shooting of M.M.A. Sandow Chinnappa Devar’s Film “Ner Vazhi” at Chennai. Although the scar of lion’s claws’ impression on my uncle’s shoulder had erased over a period of time but his narration of harrowing experience still linger in my mind as he was left by the trainers to defend all by himself due to the sudden unusual behaviour of the trained lion. In Manohar’s words “My Villanish roaring voice had frightened even the lion itself to leave me alive”. Similarly in 1984 while in action on stage for the drama trick scene sequence “ N a r a g a s u r a n ” seated on a Trolly R . S . M a n o h a r ’ s instructions “IRU DAA” meaning “to wait” falsely heard by his technician as “IZHU DAA” meaning “to pull”, led to R.S.Manohar’s fall from 20 feet height on back stage. In-spite of his bad fall he had completed the balance 15 minutes of the drama bearing with his uncontrollable pain on a Sunday morning show at sir Raja Annamalai Mandram. If only a bigger crack had developed little higher on his neck he would have been rendered permanently paralysed for the rest of his life. In 1979 R.S.Manohar and his troupe had a miraculous escape when a semi permanent stage roof totally collapsed due to heavy rain just before the start of their play. Excerpts from speech ADDRESSD BY HIS EXCELLENCY D R . K . R O S A I A H , GOVERNOR OF TAMIL NADU AT THE 91ST BIRTH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS OF LATE R.S.MANOHAR AT INFOSYS HALL, T.NAGAR, CHENNAI ON 28.06.2015 AT 06.30 PM. “R.S. Manohar had earned a renowned name in the field of Theater Art. He started with social plays which set his foot in stage Dramas. It earned him a special name. His devotion and dedication, determination to give his best and bring out the best out of his accompanying artists brought pride to Tamil Nadu Theater arts. It would be interesting to note that R.S.Manohar has given more than 7,900 shows and 31 of his memorable productions were on Mythological and Historical Themes. His shows projected our rich and glorious heritage, demonstrated the complexity of human nature and above all brought the historic past, the renowned epics of Tamil and their glory to the younger generation. He was a pillar of the Tamil Theater and introduced new ideas and concepts in stage performance. He was the first to introduce Drama scope with stereophonic sound system. The passing away of R.S.Manohar has left a void in Tamil Theater and stage field” Contact: s.shivp prasadh@gmail.com T. Nagar Resident For Over 7 Decades Nataka Kavalar R.s. SRM University hosted the DST Inspire Science Camp for school students of class 11th and 12th from Chennai and neighbouring taluks, districts with a total of 300 participants attended various workshop which was held recently. SPACE, a pioneer organization working towards development of science and astronomy in India has conducted the Sun Sky watch workshop. “Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research” (INSPIRE) is an Innovative programme initiated by the Department of Science and Technology to attract talents to the excitement and study of science at an early age. The space workshop makes it easy to discover or share new contents in this inspire camp 2015. Each activity support slightly different kinds of content in their workshop. Amazing Astronomy a short presentation was given by S. Venkata Narayanan, Zonal Business Manager, SPACE. This kind of workshop is to provide hands-on science experiment in Astronomy and Space Science as a part of the conference theme; this will ignite the spark of Imagination and Curiosity. Hands-on learning changes the student’s perception of science from a ‘burden’ to a ‘discovery’. Students enjoy challenges that are fun and work towards a better future. The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. Alagiriswamy, Asst. Prof SRM University Dept. of Physics and Nano Technology. He was motivating the students in his inaugural address “This will attract a rare mix of students from across the schools and those to whom these issues are relatively new. I ensure, there’s something for everyone. I am sure that this side-line event will be a memorable, highly educational and ‘not- to-be-missed’ event”. He joined with audience in appreciating the SPACE team which has discovered 20 new asteroids in the past six years. A short presentation on Sun and its features were presented to the students. Through this workshop students learnt about how to safely observe the Sun. Students learnt how Sun looks different when viewed though a solar filter, about different solar features. Students realized the importance of using safe methods for solar observation. During the field observation students had hands- on practice of aligning a telescope towards Sun, viewing the Sun through telescope using solar filter and projection method.
