In Brazil, over 100 people have been killed by mudslides and floods triggered by heavy rains in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo states.

Deadly deluge

southeastern Brazil since Jan. 1. Heaviest hit
have been Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo

Megan Forni looks at a giant tree that fell on
her house splitting it in half in Fair Oaks. She
was trapped in a room under the tree until
firefighters helped free her. Forni and other
family members in the house were unhurt.
2. Burj Khalifa
Dubai's Burj Khalifa was debuted and
renamed on Monday, Jan. 4. Burj Khalifa is
the world's tallest building (2,717 feet),
features the highest observation deck and
was renamed after Sheik Khalifa bin Zayed Al
Nahyan, the ruler of neighboring Abu Dhabi
who came to the aid of Dubai during the
financial meltdown.
Vancouver, British Columbia, will play host to
the 2010 Winter Olympics from Feb. 12-28,
and the Paralympic Winter Games from
March 12-21.
Fairy tale palaces, towering pagodas, and
even an Egyptian Sphynx, all carved from ice,
are among the sights at this year's Harbin
International Ice and Snow Sculpture
Festival.
