William Clark visited an indigenous village along the Scioues River in 1804. The village had cone-shaped dwellings covered in painted buffalo robes that were arranged in an orderly fashion. The villagers presented Clark with a fat dog as a sign of respect, which Clark and his party ate and found to be flavorful. While there, Clark also discovered a small burrowing animal known as a prairie dog, killing one and catching another alive by pouring water into its hole.
