2. The two world wars make it clear in Western countries the need to adequately attend to the huge number of people with amputations
in the locomotor system that caused dysfunctions, which affected the population, causing functional deficits. To this situation
diseases considered then endemic were added. The clearest example is Poliomelitis, which affected a large number of children,
causing highly disabling situations for the individual. Orthopedic surgeons and traumatologists improved the situation of many
patients with the treatments applied, but there was a lack of continuity to try to restore the lost function, either in its entirety or in its
most appropriate functional substitution in each case.
From these needs arises the great impulse of Physiotherapy in the Western world. Thus, both in the United States and the United
Kingdom, there was a notable increase in Physiotherapy professionals, who were called Physical Therapists and Physiotherapists,
respectively. This increase spread shortly afterwards to the rest of Europe, leaving only Spain, Italy and Greece without incorporating
it until many years later.
Physiotherapy was officially born in Spain through the Decree Law of June 26, 1957, which establishes the specialty of
Physiotherapy, Health Technical Assistant, Practitioner and Nurses, with two years of training and dependents of the Faculties of
Medicine. With this regulation the training of physiotherapists is structured and, to all those who were performing physiotherapist
functions with the title of ATS, Practitioner or Nurse, by means of Complementary Resolutions are given the opportunity to obtain the
title of Specialist in Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy was born as a university career in Spain through Royal Decree 2,965 / 80, of December 12, 1980, on the integration in
the University of Physiotherapy Studies as a University School of Physiotherapy. Subsequently, the Order of the Ministry of Education
and Science of June 1, 1982, which establishes the Guidelines to develop the Study Plans of the University Schools of
Physiotherapy. With this new regulation, the training premises are changed substantially, going from two years of ATS specialty to
three years, giving the opportunity for it to be more appropriate and focused on the Diploma in Physiotherapy, with a teaching load of
3,600 hours. , comparable to what is contained in the Study Plans in the EEC
